This might help.

http://www.busandcoachforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40763&p=157827&hilit=telephone+interview#p157827

I recently applied for a vacancy at First Bus Livingston.
I'm qualified driver, 5 years experience with Stagecoach (Perth), driver qualification, manual licence etc.

I submitted my app, answered the online questionaire and then was asked to do telephone interview. The interviewer who sounded like 18 year old girl asked questions on three main areas.
What makes me want to drive for First?
What do i think are the main duties/ responsibilities of a bus driver?
Describe one particular incident where I have been involved in dealing with a member of public and my actions to assist that person with their issues!

I thought I'd answered the questions fairly well but the interviewer didnt seem satisfied with my generalising answer to questions on my attitude to customer service. I had to give an example of a specific incident and perhaps my weak answer to this question resulted in me being dropped from the selection process.
I'm annoyed and frustrated, as I think I do have a good attitude to dealing with the public, but maybe in this instance I didnt communicate well enough to give a satisfactory answer.

Does anyone know, what is it they are looking for?? I'm a bit baffled at their rejection, so still looking for work.

What was your answers to the questions if you don't mind d me asking

I don't think there's any particular correct answers for interview questions, personally. What might be the answer to a specific question for somebody else might not necessarily be the answer for you, as I've found based on personal experience. For me it's just making the right preparations and making sure that you plan for any unexpected questions that you could be asked.

I find job interviews done over the telephone (I've only had a couple at the most) can be easier in some aspects, but I personally much prefer face to face interviews. Best of luck with yours though, I hope it goes well.

What a load of utterly insulting b*ll*cks!!

When did First suddenly start giving a hoot about it's buses drivers or their level of professionalism anyway?! This being a company (not the only one) who literally imported foreign driving staff a few years back to desperately try and plug the gaping holes in the organisation's staffing at pretty much every depot. Some of the eastern Europeans they employed could, quite literally, barely speak English. But now even a qualified, time served driver must pass a 'telephone interview' rather than a simple chat with the staff manager?

Do we now have a fresh, new Firstgroup who value and respect their staff and no longer have eye watering levels of turnover across the board? Didn't think so...

If First are upping their standards, surely this is cause for celebration, not complaint?

And how do you know the "telephone interview" is not simply a chat with the staff manager?

I remember one of my mates telling me when he worked with Stagecoach Perth, that his interview consisted of going to the Inveralmond Depot and having an informal chat with one of the managers, and for the practical side of it was taking a Volvo PS from the depot to Almondbank and back. After that he got the job on the spot.

Mind you that was a few years ago now...

The telephone interview is a Group HR matter, the process is nothing to do with local depot level at that stage. It would be a far better process if it was at local level.

Do you think First are upping their standards? I repeat my previous pondering regarding staff turnover...
