Just recentley had an email inviting me to register a contactless is this worth doing as i am outside london all advice greatfully recieved
Assuming it isn't a phishing email, the benefit of registering a contactless card is being able to monitor travel in London as the journey history is then available on the relevant secure part of the TfL website.

Obviously, if you never need to use Contactless to travel in London there is no point registering.

TfL wouldn't send an email asking you to register a payment card. It would be nonsensical for them to do so, as if they are emailing you about a card, it must be one which is already registered with them!

It's probably just a phishing email. I'd just delete and move on, maybe first forwarding to the scam reporting service (but take care not to click any links in the email!).

It appears that it is a genuine email as everything checks out as i recieve the weekly travel updates but i have deleted anyway as i would have no use for a contactless card

Best to register by going to https://contactless.tfl.gov.uk/ just in case it is a phishing email.

You don’t have to register a card to use it to travel, but it helps to be able to see journey history if anything goes wrong or if you need to claim a refund or get a receipt for expenses etc.

This raises some interesting general questions. Do we have to have a registered card for TfL to have our email address? It's a very long time since I bought my first Oyster Card, but I'm sure I did that online (where an email address may have been given) and cannot remember if I registered it then. I certainly have it registered now. The possibility of a scam raises the question - what other potential scams should we be wary of around digital ticketing?

To be honest I would just be wary of any email for anything that encourages you to click on a link to correct details that you weren't already expecting.

I’ve had a couple of TfL emails in the past that were basically asking if I was aware that my normal Oyster use (on a registered card) could be done just as easily on a contactless card if I preferred. But that was more like normal marketing when contactless was relatively new.

I did then use a registered contactless debit card for a short while, but then went back to my normal PAYG when I got my senior railcard.

If you register your cards you can monitor your journey history much more easily. Whether this is useful for you I don't know. Mine are registered and I'm an occasional visitor to London.

As others have said, I would recommend navigating to the TfL website independently, in case it is a phishing scam.

There is no need to register a contactless card to use it to travel on TfL serevices (or any other services in the contactless PAYG area in and around London)

With an unregistered card you can view 7-days worth of journey history via the TfL website
If you register your card the journey history is available for a lot longer (I can't remember exactly how long but I've got it in my head it's a year)
