I don't know, but they could be a bit overstretched with new X1/X2 routes which extend the routes they took over.

I can't say I'm much impressed with Thames Travel since the GoVia takeover, although the extension of services between Wallingford and Didcot is welcomed. In particular, they're in my bad books after waiting 2 hours for the 1 am X40 from Oxford to Reading (as shown on their own website), only to be told by the driver that the last bus for Reading is now at 8! I don't understand why it was cut short at Wallingford, the Wallingford-Reading leg used to be just as busy.

Thames Travel (in their independent days) tended to achieve 'efficiency' in terms of fast running times, minimum stand time at termini, and driver duties close to the limits of drivers hours.

Which of course means if there are any delays en route, they will snowball.

I'm not using them much now so can't comment on what Go-Ahead have done. I am aware that the Bracknell outstation has recently closed completely (this was entirely a package of Bracknell Forest Council tendered routes) and the routes gone on emergency contract to First / Courtney. Not quite sure what was behind this.

How did they gain X1/X2? Didn't Stagecoach operate the X32?

No, these are all commercial routes. X2 was formerly Oxford Bus Co (Oxford-Didcot), but was transferred within Go-Ahead to Thames Travel (and recently extended from Didcot to Wallingford); the X32 has, as far as I know, always been a commercial route and was originally introduced by Thames Travel a few years ago, and has never been operated by anyone else (it was recently extended from Chilton on to Wantage); the X1 is a new route that basically replaces the former 32 (which *was*, some years ago, a Stagecoach route, and more recently OCC-tendered before becoming almost entirely commercial) between Wantage to Abingdon (via a different route into Abingdon), and carrying on to Oxford.

As for what's going on? I think the short answer is that they introduced (in December) a somewhat ambitious, and very wide-ranging and (South Oxon) network-wide set of timetable changes that didn't in all cases allow sufficient time for some journeys, and for which they may well have had, at the time, insufficient resources. (Certainly the service for several weeks after the changes was consistently atrocious.) To some extent this may have been improved recently, with some buses being transferred from Oxford Bus Co, and with buses freed up by abandoning the Bracknell operations.

But, yes, there is evidently still further to go.

Many moons ago, around 1990, there was an X32 route operated by Thames Transit. Mondays to Fridays only, one morning journey from Wantage, Rowstock Corner, Harwell and Didcot to Oxford and an evening return journey.

Also, if memory serves me correctly, I think Thames Travel ran a version of the X32 as the X42 for a while...

Back in the early days of Stagecoach Oxford, there was an X35 route that, I think, ran from Oxford to Didcot via A34 to South Abingdon, then Drayton and villages. I recall a journey on this route than ran about 220am from Oxford, back in the days of a very intensive post-midnight service.
