Hello all,

I'm coming to the UK in a few weeks. I'm landing in Stansted and want to travel to the Crewe area. I checked and an advance to Birmingham and then to Crewe works out the best at £17. The route planner (NRE) tells me that I can take the train to Tottenham Hale and thence the tube to Euston and then a train to Birmingham. Is my train ticket valid on the tube? Also, the journey planner tells me it will take 44 minutes to get from Tottenham Hale to Euston arriving in 11.01am which it then tells me I should get the 11.03am train. That seems like a very tight connection...

Will it really take 44 minutes to do that tube journey? And will my advance be valid on the next train to Birmingham if the tube took longer than the planned journey?

Thanks

A ticket from Stansted to Birmingham does indeed include travel by tube.
Also, the journey planner tells me it will take 44 minutes to get from Tottenham Hale to Euston arriving in 11.01am which it then tells me I should get the 11.03am train. That seems like a very tight connection...
The journey planner isn't presenting it's data very well in that case, it's just saying there is a total of 44 minutes for the cross-London transfer.

(If you're interested to read more about cross-London transfers see London Underground & DLR)
Will it really take 44 minutes to do that tube journey?
It should take 12 minutes for the tube journey.
And will my advance be valid on the next train to Birmingham if the tube took longer than the planned journey?
Absolutely.

From our RailUK Fares & Ticketing Guide: Advance tickets

1.1.3.1.2 Delays while travelling

In normal circumstances, Advance tickets are only valid on the booked train(s). However if delays occur while travelling, either
  • on the rail journey, or,
  • only in the case where the Advance ticket is a through ticket covering the entire journey, on a connecting journey by other means of public transport (e.g. Underground, bus or ferry),
you will be allowed to complete your journey on later trains.
However the train company or route restriction shown under Route on the ticket still applies, e.g. for a ticket routed TOC ONLY you must wait for the next train operated by the train company indicated, even if this increases the length of the delay further.

Another common question is:
I am combining tickets; am I covered in the event of a delay?
As long as you have allowed the minimum connection time at the station where you are combining tickets, then this is treated as a valid through journey and the same conditions apply as above, i.e. in the event of a delay you may take later trains in compliance with the route or train company restriction shown on your ticket.
Just be sure to allow the appropriate connecting time at Birmingham, if you are "splitting" there.

The system has automatically allocated appropriate connecting times for you to cross London. If you are fortunate to land at Stansted early enough to take an appropriate earlier connecting service from Stansted to Tottenham Hale, then you may do so. There are plenty of facilities (including a pub) at Euston while you wait for your booked train.

That's a really helpful reply, thank you! I hope that there won't be delays on the tube, but would it be good to print out the journey plan and take a picture of any tube boards showing a delay? Or will Virgin staff take me at my word? Thank you so much! It does seem odd the way they present this, I checked a few other trains to check, they are all the same.

I have left myself bags of time from landing to getting the train. I think I have quite some time to kill in the airport before my train. I figured though by the time I have allowed for a delay, passport queues, and baggage claim and finding the station (collecting a cup of tea on the way), I will only have a short time waiting.
I am in no rush and have a friend I can call on in Birmingham so I will leave plenty of time.

Just found the pub on Google maps - thanks!

Personally I wouldn't bother to do that, it will be obvious to the staff that you will have used the Victoria line. And if there are major delays on the Victoria line (and it will have to be major delays in order for you to miss your connection at Euston) then the staff will probably already be aware - and if not it would be easy for them to verify.

if you have access to Twitter on the move, you can check the status of the Victoria line (@victorialine) as you're approaching Tottenham Hale (or by visiting tfl.gov.uk on a smartphone). If there are major delays, you can stay on the train to Liverpool Street; change onto the Underground there and travel to Euston Square, which is just a few minutes walk from Euston Station. And I'd wager that you'd still make your connection.

You're welcome :)

transmanche has covered your concerns regarding the tube (Victoria Line), but I will just advise that, as you have......
...left myself bags of time from landing to getting the train. I think I have quite some time to kill in the airport before my train....
...I would advise taking an earlier connecting train from Stansted to Tottenham Hale, and spending more time at Euston, unless there's some reason to hang around Stansted. That way, if there are delays on GA or LU, the chances of you being late are minimised.

I would actually recommend getting off the tube at Kings cross/St Pancras and walking to Euston with a quick stop off at O'Neills on the left just after St Pancras. (I drink Doom Bar)

This also means you have the option of going all the way to Liverpool Street without an additional change.

I sometimes wish Super-off peak from Kings Cross didn't start early on a Friday, but then I'm rarely on expenses on a Friday

I was in the "Euston Tap" on Saturday, just outside the station (old toilets I think on the main road). If you like your beer, go there. You will be spoilt for choice.

Their selection is relaly excellent, and they do a massive range of types as well, from craft light lagers through to 'puts hair on your chest' belgian 9%ers.

I quite like the Doric Arch just outside the euston main concourse.

I like the little nook they have on the right as you come up the main stairs.

With these 2 places, combined with the great South Indian places on Drummond street, the pie & ale pub the next street over, Mestizo the mexican and Shaker & Co for cocktails, Euston has really perked up over the last couple of years.
