I line in zone 2 and have an oyster card PAYG and can travel to Egham from 1. either Finchley Road and Frognal, changing at Richmond or 2. Finchley Road tube via Waterloo, and then on to Egham. Either way I leave zone 6 after Feltham. Can you tell me - with PAYG do I really have to leave the train at Feltham, touch out and then get the next train to Egham, adding 20 mins onto my journey? Then do the same on the return journey in order to touch in? And would I have to do the same if I had a London zone travelcard on my oyster card? Many thanks for your help.

On PAYG, unfortunately yes you do have to leave the train. However, if you stand by the door at the front of the 6th carriage (or somewhere around there-it's been a while) coming out of London you are right next to the Oyster reader at Feltham and can potentially jump off, tap, and jump back on again (or at least that's what i used to do!)

There is no requirement to leave the train if you have a travelcard on Oyster. Assuming of course that you hold a valid ticket for the non Oyster portion of the journey.

Failure to touch the reader at Feltham will result in the maximum fare being charged which may not be any more than you would pay if your used the platform reader but will not count towards capping.

Many thanks for your responses. I didn't quite believe it and thought I had misunderstood when I was told. Not really 21st century. Tough on the students going to Royal Holloway. Many thanks again.

If I understand rightly, you want to use PAYG for part of the journey and some other ticket (unspecified) for the part outside the PAYG area?

Why do you want to do this? Why not just use a through ticket for the whole journey?

If you had a travel card then you should buy a paper ticket from the appropriate Boundary Zone, then there would be no need to touch out.

A fairer system would be for those who decide to even things out so that more zones were added westwards as have been added northwards to Watford Junction. Thanks again for your time in responding.

It's cheaper.

It's only £12.20 for a return from Finchley Road & Forgnall to Egham, assuming the OP travels in weekdays after 0930 (they didn't say...)

If a single to Feltham and another back is £2.80 each, then £5.70 for a Feltham to Egham return, that only saves 90p. Is delaying your journey by 20 minutes really worth 45p? If the OP touches in between 1600 and 1900 in either direction the Oyster single costs £4.80 despite the fact that the Off-Peak Day Return is still valid.
