TRAIN DRIVER - MATHS AND ENGLISH

Hi, I've noticed some train driver ads state you need maths and English A-C or equivalent. Is this the case for all train driver jobs. I've got everything else just not A-C in Maths, will this be a stumbling block?

It’s because it’s an apprenticeship. You have to meet the criteria for government funding but it’s my understanding that the TOC will put you through this if successful.

A friend of mine started with a TOC last year and a few on the course didn’t have it. They put them through functional skills in order to meet the criteria. Hope this helps.

I had a D at GCSE for IT & Maths and a C for English. They got me to sit functional skills as part of the apprenticeship which I passed. So don’t worry, it won’t stop you getting the job!

As others have said, there are folks who couldn't prove they had the relevant qualification who are now doing them as part of the apprenticeship, despite the entry requirements - however I'm only aware of that being the case for It qualifications and not maths / English but don't see why it would be any different.

TOCs will be keen to show the are adding maths / English / it skills as part of the training and developing people to that standard might well appeal.

One of the first rules of applying for any job is to meet the criteria on the application. If a TOC has stated they need Maths and English then you should ensure you have them. Which application / TOC have you seen with them being needed ?

No, as others have stated, some TOCs will allow you to take functional skills.


The initial sift can be just as ruthless and you need to be sure which TOC you are applying to and what they will and won't allow. Maths and English as an entry requirement is slowly gaining traction and has been long touted. Anybody who doesn't have these qualifications I would strongly recomend that you get them as soon as possible if your chosen TOC decides to have them as a prerequisite.
