can't make much sense of it myself such a confusing article . But apparently a freight train hit some deer on the uckfield branch last night , or at least that's what The Argus want us to think.
The incident happened at eridge, which the article claims is " in between uckfield and Tunbridge Wells".

In all truthfulness I think what's happened is either a test train 1Q78 or RDT hit the deer, but I can't find any workings.

A RAILWAY line was blocked after a freight train slammed into a group of deer.

The incident happened around 9.30pm last night between Uckfield and Tunbridge Wells.

Southern Rail had to terminate one of its Uckfield services as a result.

A Southern Rail spokesman: “Sadly, a freight train struck a number of deer near Eridge at about 9.30pm last night.

The freight train's rear engine could not be restarted, which meant we had to terminate one of our Uckfield services at Crowborough while the line was being cleared.

I'm also struggling to work out how the rear locomotive has problems if the front locomotive hits the deer?

Union Pacific getting trackage rights over Network Rail territory is rather more newsworthy! I'd have thought there'd have been gauge clearance issues though, surprised it didn't take out the bridges and platforms along with the deer...

Quality reportage! A stock image of a Union Pacific loco and a photoshopped deer. All supposedly in rural Sussex.

Oh deer!.jpg

At least they managed to get a 377 in there. The line isn't electrified, but it's still a southern unit !

It happened around 0200 this morning when an engineers train hit a herd of about 6 deer
The exact location was about half mile south of Eridge towards Crowborough

Must be where this confusion originated

Anyway why is a Brighton and Hove Newspaper reporting on a issue that is at least
Let me Google it
18.9 miles away?

Does this mean that 2 different trains hit deer on Tuesday night? It was reported on Facebook around 10pm Tuesday that a passenger train had hit deer and was broken and then it appears an engineers train hit deer at 2am?

There are huge amounts of deer in the area, I often see herds of them in the fields alongside as I enjoy my commute

Let's hope that the members of the herd weren't having an illegal stag party on the tracks...

On a more serious note, that article in the Argus is quite possibly the worst piece of journalism I have ever seen. The student newspaper I'm involved with could do better...

Argus is a common newspaper name - it refers to a monster - Argus Panoptes - from Greek mythology which was "all-seeing" on account of its 100 eyes. Paper names often go for grandiose things like this - The Sun (shining a light on news), The Guardian (protecting news), Daily Mirror (reflecting news). Whether they're successful or not is up to you - the Argus appears to have had a bad day out.

All that said, deer aren't the cleverest... we shouldn't fawn over them.

Up the creek
Local newspapers like to keep the old names, some of which have been in use for well over a hundred years, to try and keep up the pretence that they are still the familiar, reliable and trusted source that they were in the old days. All too many are just advertising platforms seeking click bait and run from remote locations with minimal local staff.

Wasn't a 73 named Brighton evening argus , could be the same newspaper different name

That's the one, used to be a passable paper although its main focus was always on Brighton & Hove Albion of course, like all local papers it's gone into freefall and isn't worth the bother unless by link to a particular story

Well I suppose if the line had 3rd rail the deer would have succumbed to that first......
