Hi,
Does anyone know about any current vacancies for tram driving in croydon, if so how and where can I apply?

Well, you can e-mail, write or tweet (@TfLOffical) to Transport for London and ask them. You can also ask at staffed tram stops, eg. East Croydon, Wimbledon. What my friend did to get a job on the railway was to e-mail most TOCs in the South and he got a reply from Greater Anglia and works at Ilford depot as an aprentice.

they advertise on the Firstgroup careers website as and when vacancies occur. Seen two in the last couple of years.

Tramlink recruitment is done oddly via the bus part of First Group rather than rail. They did a campaign via Croydon/Bromley jobcentres a year or so ago to find drivers.

Hi all - a couple years ago my partner applied for croydon tram driver role and got through. He was waiting ages to be emailed with an interview date and finally when the email came he was told that there were not actually positions available and to reapply when they posted vacancies again as they couldnt hold his details anymore due to data protection.

He is constantly looking on first groups site, emailing them, checking various other sites etc, but never any vacancies. The replies he gets to his emails keep saying no vacancies. The frustrating thing is we keep hearing of people (friends of friends - and random people on forums like this) getting these "non-existant" jobs. My partners been a bus driver 7 or 8 years and is desperate for a change!

Are people getting in because they know the right person? Are there ever actually vacancies? Is there anything more he can do to try and get his foot in the door?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks :)

East Croydon tram stop is not staffed, except by revenue staff and neighbourhood/BTP officers on patrols at times to suit their needs. Wimbledon is not specifically staffed for tram enquiries, but Tube and SWT staff might, I suppose, perhaps hear something about vacancies from time to time.

I'm a driver at Tramlink, and having chatted to the last lot of trainees that came through the system, most of them waited two years for a vacancy and applied through the First Group website.

If anybody was getting in through any back door, then I'm sure there would be some loud complaints to the Union about this from the drivers !

Ok, I have to back track a bit. I forgot two of the trainees were already working for Tramlink in the Croydon travel shop, so they were internal applicants.

However, they still had to do all the psychometric testing and Manager interview.

Hi - thanks for the reply.. By backdoor i meant more along the lines of "hey my friend would be great" and "hey friend, theres a vacancy coming up..." - that sort of thing :)

As i said, my other half has been looking for vacancies for a long time - i actually think it started almost 2yrs ago but he waited about 6months or so for an interview date that never came and then was told that his details had to be deleted for data protection (which is fair enough).

Was just curious due to people getting a position late 2013/early 2014 when we had not seen any vacancies! Will tell him to just keep looking and trying!

All I can say is that half the drivers have friends or relatives who would like to become drivers, but to make it fair, everyone has to apply through the Firstgroup website like everyone else, and get selected to go forward for the assessments.

It's quite a small depot here, and we would quickly get to know about it if anybody's friend or relative got an unfair advantage because of who they might know, and I think the drivers would make a fuss to the Union if something like that happened.

I guess your partner has to keep looking out for those vacancies. Or I'll tip him the wink if I hear about any ;)

Hi guys/girls
I'm the other half holly is talking about. Finding vacancies is challenging plus very frustrating seeing as I got to the "awaiting assessment date" then got timed out before it could go forward . I was told tho by a driver in my garage (Merton bus garage) that normally vacancies pop up around August/September time not really sure how true that is tho and also I don't know if I should pop down to the tram garage/output to ask for any vacancies. Would that be a total waste of time I wonder?

I really wouldn't waste time and effort going down to the depot.

Just ring the main number 0208 665 9695 and ask for the human resources department. They'll tell you what's what, and maybe they'll still have you on file somewhere?

Just a supplement to what has already been said, I actually applied for the position a total of 3 times, each time I appeared to pass the initial sifting with email replies along the lines of, waiting for invite to interview or assessment, but each time after 6 months or so this timed out. Thankfully now very happy doing something else but best of luck if tram driving is your aspiration and can only say keep on trying.

I just think tram driving might be a lot more better then driving buses plus I got no trade skills so for me it's ideal. How long ago was you last timed out and got the "vacancy has now been withdrawn" email if you don't mind me asking?

Don't worry at this point! think I was maybe one of the first phone interviews. You may just have to wait a little longer as they have to go though and pick the highest scoring people. You defo did good in your interview or you'd hear back pretty quickly saying you haven't passed this stage.

Received the news Monday that I passed, however they did say they would only be taking highest performers to next stage which I understand but is very annoying. Anybody else heard any further??

Yeah mate had mine on the 11th wanted to get it out the way and also got through. Reletively simple, hardest is group bourdon test.

When we finished there was 9 people so they had to let us know via email if we passed it not so not sure how many got through. 10 people present on assessment

Yeah mate everything u said. It's reletively straight forward until u get to the middle which U need to think abit more. Next stage is driving test and if successful then it's managers interview, if successful medical and references etc. On email does say driving tests etc won't be till at least after 15th Jan
