Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I'm looking at going up to Liverpool on Monday with a friend for the day.

We where looking at ticket options and came across the Saveaway. Looking at the map I only recognise one of the stations, but from what I see some areas are covered by Bus/Ferrie.

So I'm a little confused to that ticket as to what I could do on the railway and where I could go to travel around.

Also by searching the forums I found the Mersey Rail Day Saver which was actually what I was thinking of just to travel around on Mersey Rail.

Which ticket is better to use? Just planning on spending the afternoon travelling around Liverpool basically....

You can buy a Saveaway for different zones, so if you are likely to only be travelling in a certain area buy one of those. You can also get a Saveaway for all zones and as you say you can use the ferry as well. The rail day ticket is slightly cheaper but if you might be using the ferry go for the Saveaway.

Well I've never travelled around Liverpool before, My plan is to travel by rail rather then ferry and bus, I see the Saveaway allows me to use a small handfull of TOCs in the area but because I've never been to the area I'm restricted for my knowledge of getting around

An All Zone Saveaway (£4.60) allows you to travel as far as West Kirby, New Brighton, Chester, Ellesmere Port, Southport, Hunts Cross, Ormskirk and Kirkby - the full extent of the Merseyrail Electrics network and is valid after 0930 M-F or anytime during the weekend. The AZ Saveaway lets you use the ferry for unlimited "single" trips, (i.e. NOT river cruises) so you are supposed to get off at each terminal and get a new boarding pass, but in practice I've never done that before.

The ME Day Saver allows you unlimited Merseyrail travel ONLY (no bus/ferry) for 10/20p less.

You may also use the Saveaway on mainline services out of Lime St stn - as far out as Garswood (Wigan line) & Newton le Willows (Chat Moss route) - the ticket can also be used on the former CLC route via Warrington Central, although I don't know the Merseyrail boundary station on that line, as I don't sign for that route - someone on here is bound to know, though ;)

Saveway ticket (all Zones) boundaries are as follows:

City Line (mainline and local services departing from Lime Street mainline):
Garswood
Newton-le-Willows
Liverpool South Parkway (for trains to Crewe and beyond)
Hough Green

Northern Line
ALL Merseyrail services, including as far as Ormskirk (beyond Maghull is technically not Merseyside)
Kirkby - Rainford
Southport - Meols Cop

Wirral Line
ALL Merseyrail services, including as far as Chester and Ellesmere Port (beyond Hooton is not Merseyside)
Bidston - Heswall

They are valid on all TOCs trains within the above boundaries - so you could even travel on ATW between Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown.

Saveaway tickets are also valid for unlimited travel on ALL local buses, including cross-river services (although not generally on the few Night buses that still run).
They are also valid on the Mersey ferries for single crossings (as stated earlier, you are supposed to pick up a free boarding pass at one of the ferry terminals, which is valid for a single crossing only).

Now that the afternoon restriction on Saveaways has been lifted (previously, they were not valid for journeys starting between 16.01 and 17.59), they are far and away the best value ticket for a day's travelling around Merseyside, from 09.30 onwards. I think they are technically also valid before 06.30, although obviously there are very few trains / buses running before this time.

Oh, and they are valid ALL day on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
