How many stations still have a Cathode Ray Tube television screen for displaying train information and which once are they?

Around 2000 they seemed to be very popular but along with the Network South East box clock they seem to have become obsolete.

Last time I was there (a few weeks ago) Brundall still had at least one, and from memory I think there are more scattered around the 'Wherry' lines.

My experience over the last few years has been that the Greater Anglia area seems to have a disproportionate number of them! There were one or two at Hatfield Peverel last time I was there, though that actually wasn't that recently.

They are found elsewhere in the South East too, though. I believe the smaller of the three (!) types of screen over the gateline at Redhill is a CRT, but seems to be both much clearer than some previous incarnations. I seem to remember that it may have been replaced like-for-like at the tail end of the time when such things were installed, so it may have been one of the more modern variants. Machynlleth still has one.
Aberystwyth had two removed, but we made a fuss because the old CRTs were bilingual and the modern CIS screens on the platforms are monolingual English. I'm assuming that's why they kept a CRT at Machynlleth alongside the modern CIS screens.
ATW MD assured me some months ago that they're in the process of converting the CIS screens to bilingual, starting at Holyhead... could take a while to reach the Cambrian

I remember the CRT monitors were notorious for Screen burn-in.

Not half as bad as the plasmas that were briefly tried at Paddington and Waterloo!

It is ironic that the LED technology that has proven so reliable and been rolled out near enough nationally was first used by First North Western at Liverpool Lime St, where they used it because plasma was too expensive!

Sometimes the cheaper solution isn't worst :)

Lot of them have disappeared from Anglia as part of AGAs upgrades, brundall does have them, as does Harwich international, albeit some very poorly replaced with a PC screen inside the CRT "box". Ely lost its recently and to be honest I can't think of any more on my patch.

It's surprising that there's still so many around, I'd have thought that most remaining ones must be very near the end of their life span before they fail

I came across a disconnected yellow example recently. I did try and work out a way of sneaking it out without anyone noticing, but value my job more than an antique I don't have space for ;)

It will cost them to dispose of it, so you might be doing them a favour!

Hadfield station has one, popped by on Sunday and I was rather surprised to see it, assumed they had all gone. It also has a new LED ticker display, so I'm guessing the CRT is just there because there is no point removing it.

Yes, I recall seeing the one at Keighley which was off, but still clearly had the writing visible.

I'm pretty sure Pwllheli has one too, and I don't think it has any LED screens. But does have automated announcements (not the text to speech ones)

Its kind of ironic as dot matrix displays use more basic technology compared to CRT screens although they have shown to be more effective.

I guess because they're switched on continuously but my old CRT TV lasted a good 20 years, and I've still got a few little ones out in the shed.

Less is more, as they say.

I've not noticed any CRT screens anywhere between Woking and Weymouth or between Lymington Pier and Brockenhurst so possibly there aren't any left in SWT's territory (at least not on the main SWML between Weymouth and Waterloo)

I think Tamworth has ones until recently.

I remember at Uttoxeter when they first installed a CRT monitor we thought it was great being able to see how the trains were running for the first time as in those days there were only announcements if the train was canceled otherwise you had to use the British Rail telephone to check if trains were on time as mobiles didn't exist.

Until very recently Barnham and Shoreham by Sea were among stations to have TV screens as they missed out on the original connex screens...

greater anglia has loads of these screens and NSE clocks I can see that changing with the new franchise?

I guess it was a requirement for SWT to replace all their screens?

Slightly OT but I remember when they were testing the then new CRT screens at Shrewsbury sometime around 1986/87. During the test period the screens cycled between displaying the actual train information and a message saying 'this system is under test - please ignore all information'. This resulted in the following rather unfortunate message:

This train terminates here

Please DO NOT board this train

Please ignore all information

Thankfully, I didn't see anyone ignore the information and board the train

I saw some CRTs recently somewhere on the Hayes branch, maybe Ladywell?

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

I guess it was a requirement for SWT to replace all their screens?

SWT (at least from my point of view in Hampshire), seems to have been done in different phases, and although all platform specific displays became the usual 3 line LED ages ago, the final exchange of the displays in ticket offices, waiting rooms and concourses etc (the sort that lists the next hour or so over 2 or 3 pages) took a lot longer. I think that latter process was still being completed a couple of years ago.

I've just returned from Southend Victoria on the AGA line and all the stations from Rayleigh to Southend (except Southend Airport) still have the old style screens. I was quite surprised as the screens at Billericay and Wickford were replaced when the stations were painted recently.
