Hi I've been interested in trains since early this year and the past few months I now know a lot about trains and how the railway works I have decided I would love to work on the railway especially Virgin trains there is a job going for on board customer service staff (Which I would love with it being on board) but it is in Edinburgh I live in crewe I was just wondering would I be able to work this job before I apply for it (I wouldn't mind the long cummute) I'm just wondering with it being on trains could I catch the train to the train station in the mornings I know nobody will know the exact answer to this but does anybody have a rough idea or know anyone who works for a train company and lives in a different location

I know of many rail staff that live hundreds of miles away from their place of work. However it is your responsibility to get to work on time. If you have a shift that starts at 5am or finishes at 1.30am then you need to make sure you can get there, or get home. Even if there are trains, I cannot imagine commuting from Crewe to Edinburgh every day is pleasurable.

By the way, I have closed the poll as it does not seem to serve any purpose.

I think you're mad to live in Crewe, and be prepared to work in Edinburgh. Before/After a long shift how would you get to/from work if your working the first or last train????

You say you know a lot about the Railway industry, but you have casually tossed aside one of the worst pitfalls, ie shift working. If you live in Stoke, why not get a Job with Nothern at Manchester?

I very often check their vaccancies and also have alerts on them but nothing seems to come up that matches my skills plus I would really love to be on board staff although I would do station work and work my way up, I know it seems mad but If I could do it I would commute long distances just for a chance to work on board especially on the pendolinos for Virgin, oh well I don't think I'm applying for it I have a relationship, family, friends and a house to keep in shape I suppose 4 hours a day on top or my working hours would be too much for me, thanks for the replies though guys lets hope something comes up nearer to me

without sounding to blunt mate i think you've got more chance of getting poop out of a rocking horse than getting a job with virgin in Edinburgh whilst living in Crewe!

even if you put willing to re locate on an application form you're generally at a disadvantage to local applicants let alone living hundreds of miles away and commuting everyday!

Be keen mate but be sensible! there is living to work and there is working to live remember, and doing a commute like that you'd have no home/personal life at all as you'd soon be knackered and you'd come to dislike what you are doing which is a waste! deffo look more local!

That will get your application binned too. On board crew = a waiting/ hospitality/ cabin crew job. That is the background/ skill set that they require.

When looking at the location of a prospective job, check the timetable for the first departure/ last arrival of the day. Make sure that you can easily get there half an hour/ after respectively these times.
