I want to travel to London, leaving from Portsmouth and Southsea (PMS). However, rather than going all the way back to Portsmouth, when I return later that evening I want to end my journey at Winchester.

1) If I buy the £32.40 off-peak return, presumably I can travel on any SWT service into London?

2) Is it valid to break (finish) my journey at Winchester on this ticket? If so, can I get any train to Winchester, or does it have to be a train that goes on to Portsmouth? I.e., can I travel on a train that does the Southampton route and get off at Winchester?

3) If I can break at Winchester, would I be allowed to get on a late train that wouldn't necessarily make it possible to continue to PMS? I.e. the 22:39 (Southampton service), 23:05 (Poole service) etc? The late trains to PMS all seem to do the Guildford route.

I presume you have this ticket http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=0440&dest=1072&tkt=SCO - which is actually a "super off-peak day return", so has some fairly significant restrictions about the times at which it can be used. The ticket has a "restriction code", BE, associated with it, which may or may not be printed on the ticket (if not identified as such)

If so, it seems the answers to your questions are

1) It's not valid on trains timed to arrive London Terminals before 12:00, except (irrelevant exceptions deleted)

2. Yes, on any train on which the ticket is valid, as Winchester is on your route, and as the ticket is valid for breaks of journey en route. Also, so long as you are on a valid route, the ultimate destination of a train that you are on is effectively irrelevant here.

NB "Boarding at the stations listed below, to any station outside London Fares_Zones 1-6 not valid on trains timed to depart:

London Terminals (except Paddington or Vauxhall or Clapham Junction) before 11:00
or after 1559_until 1901;

Vauxhall_before 11:03 or after 16:03 until 19:05.
later;

London Paddington before 11:00 or after 15:01 until 19:16;

Clapham Junction_before 11:09 or after 16:06 until 19:10."

Yes you can return via, and stop short at Winchester, and yes to getting any suitable train whatever its final destination. You can also get later trains - there is a designated connecting service out of the 2305 Poole train that runs from Eastleigh at 0030 to deal with the timetable gap you've discovered.

Winchester has ticket barriers and your ticket almost certainly won't work them so depending on how late they man them you might need to be let out by staff, but this has no bearing on validity.

Great, thank you! I'll be travelling up after work, and aim to get one of the late services, so won't be arriving or departing during the banned times.

Thanks for your help with this.

And thanks to you too - they usually only use the barriers up until about 8pm and I'll get back later than that so will be exiting through a side gate.
