I'm trying to do some exploration around Birmingham and I am wanting to use a West Midlands day ranger, however am travelling from outside the area. I am wanting to use a Bristol TM to Bromsgrove Off Peak Day Return in conjunction with a West Midlands day ranger for this, and travel to Birmingham using a XC from Bristol TM to Birmingham New Street.

As far as I can see this should be valid, as it is a mapped route from Bristol to Bromsgrove (Via either PB or PW), and under NRCoT 14.3 the train doesn't need to stop, but I'm wanting to be absolutely sure this is under the validity of the tickets, as obviously you wouldn't normally be able to travel this section of the XC line on a Bromsgrove ticket, and I won't be able to generate in itinerary to show a TM or RPI.

As long as the tickets you hold are valid for a non-stop split there won't be a problem as all XC trains from Bristol to Birmingham will normally pass through Bromsgrove station. The fact that they use the Worcester avoiding line is neither here nor there.

Yes, this is a valid combination. You will be able to use the cheap 'not via Birmingham' fare to Bromsgrove, so this split is cheaper than buying a through Bristol-Birmingham Off-Peak Return - though of course the latter would be valid to return within a month, as opposed to this combination only being valid for one day.

I don't think you're likely to face any difficulties here, but if you did, I would have thought the most likely cause would be unfamiliarity with the validity of the West Midlands Day Ranger. If it would reassure you, you can have the NRE page and validity map downloaded, ready to show if need be.

Brilliant thank you, this was exactly the plan, especially useful as I'm travelling past Birmingham and only for a day trip.

Update on this, used the ticket combination yesterday, worked flawlessly. On buying the tickets the man staffing the office said he saw at least a few people a week buy the combination, and the onboard staff on the XC service barely batted an eyelid at it both ways. Obviously the ranger did fail to open a single barrier though, even at new street.
