There is a recent ad I see online and on TV from Northern Railway promoting 500+ destinations.

Advert:
(Advert for Northern Railways showing people going to the city, seaside, commuting or days out with clear reference to 500+ destinations)

Yes. Northern do call at 500+ stations but I would not call some destinations like for a holiday or a trip as you see in the ad.

What would the correct number of Northern 'destinations' be if we tightened up the definition?

A selection from me

Destinations:
Manchester Piccadilly
Windermere
Newcastle
Sheffield
Hope

Not a destination:
Ince
South Bank
Stanlow & Thornton
Moses Gate
Humphrey Park

From https://www.dictionary.com/browse/destination we have
The place to which a person or thing travels or is sent.

If you're travelling to Moses Gate, then that is your destination.

I personally have no issue with them stating they serve 500 destinations if they've got 500 locations I could end my journey at.

When I was at Uni, and travelling home for the weekend, my destination on the train was always Walsall, despite it being somewhere I probably wouldn't make a special effort to visit for a holiday these days.

Why does a ‘destination’ have to be for a holiday or a leisure trip. What’s wrong with a destination for commuting to work or study or even going ‘home’ to visit family and friends?
(Obviously a few ‘suspended’ stations like Stanlow or Teesside Airport are irrelevant.)
