It’s a fixed distant - a facsimile of a semaphore distant signal, used where the next signal is either always at danger, or is to be treated as such. It saves on the cost of a regular distant signal and is more reliable too!

That is a Fixed Distant, presumably for the signal at the other end of the platform. I am not sure if it is new, possibly part of the signalling work being done during the latest closure, as I don’t remember seeing one facing that way before. Or I might have missed it: at that point I am either levering myself up out of the seat in order to leave quickly when the train stops or I am wheezing badly if I have walked along the pier and am just plodding along with my head down.

Back in the 2020/21 thread, someone did reply, (just after your question), that it was fitted to allow up trains to leave Ryde St John’s on a green aspect. I see it’s double sided though, so perhaps it already had one side already?
