Hi

I'm 3d modelling Whitby town station as it was at the turn of the century and wondered if anyone here knows of or has seen/come across any plans that show the George Townsend Andrews overall roof which was removed in about 1954?

I've tried network rail who have some plans but none of the roof, North Yorkshire council archive (don't have any) and I've sent an email to the NRM (no response as yet).

I have a couple of photos but I'm stuck really. I'm interested in its construction I know it was similar to Scarborough station but was of two unequal spans (scarborough being two equal spans).

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for the links, I'm a bit wary of buy books unless I can flick through them first to see if there's anything in them I can use.....ill see if I can find them in a good old bookshop first.....

Any chance anyone could possibly scan and post a low resolution copy of the line drawing in Ken Hooles book so i can see if it's usable?

Would anyone be interesting in seeing some images when it's ready? I'm doing the project for nothing more than my own interest.

Thanks again

Sadly, I've not got access to a scanner, but Hoole's book has the following line drawings:

Station:
North elevation as built,
North elevation with later shops added,
East elevation,
Overhead plan showing internal rooms, tracks, columns and roof crests and valleys,
South elevation showing unequal spans of roof, apparently the first and second columns were moved in 1900 to allow greater clearance,
West elevation,
Platform elevation,

Other Buildings:
Signal box, goods warehouse and engine shed.

There's also a photo from 1952 showing the south end of the trainshed and its unequal spans.

The North Eastern Railway Association have a substantial archive based, I believe, in Darlington. It may be worth contacting them to see if they've any plans or photos which may help.

I'd love to see the finished project if you can pop some images on here when it's done. :D

Thanks Blythpower that's really useful. Just out of interest does that book also have scarborough station in it?

Ill post some images when it's done, may be a few weeks though.

I'm afraid there's no Scarborough. The full list of stations covered is Alnwick, Alston, Guisborough, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Richmond and Whitby Town.

...and a somewhat cheaper £22.50 from Nick Tozer Railway Books.

Thanks, found the book in a local library, it was a referenace book so I got the relevant pages scanned on A3 which came out better than the book.

Now to work :D
