According to the Guido Fawkes website Boris Johnson already has 36 backers, Rishi Sunak 26 and Penny Mordaunt 10 - so Boris could be on his way back! Website link https://order-order.com/2022/10/20/whos-backing-who-the-spreadsheet-returns/https://order-order.com/2022/10/20/whos-backing-who-the-spreadsheet-returns/
Penny Mordaunt seems to the only one already actively campaigning at this stage

It seems pretty clear that if Boris were to run and win the Tory party (or at least the parliamentary Tory party) would implode so let’s hope he does.

With Johnson it is a case of whether his ego is bigger than his judgement. His ego is no doubt telling him that he would be swept back into Number 10 as the great saviour returning in the country’s hour of need. His judgement might think that there is a risk that he would not get 100 nominations, which would be highly embarrassing: perhaps he should wait until the next leadership election (there’ll be one along soon).

Like buses, they come along in threes.

How can that even be, to even consider a Return of the clown ?

have they lost their minds ?- I mean seriously.. have they forgotten ?

Bringing him back is to make a mockery of the whole year…

we are entering Berlusconi territory… theres better politics in the Caribbean republics.

I can only credit him with 1 good thing, and thats the support for Ukraine, thats been worldclass and above most other leaders. But other wise, I wouldnt trust him to make a burger at mcDonalds let alone fix the mess.

I'm convinced eligible voting Tory members & 2/3 of the Tory party genuinely live on another planet.

He doesn't strike me as someone who would be remotely interested in leading a party in opposition, so he well come to the conclusion 'now or never'. Unless we're suggesting we'll get at least two more Tory PMs before the next election, which at this rate could well be entirely possible!

Boris returning as PM I fear would make the UK effectively ungovernable. You have to remember at least 54 Tory MPs, and probably a lot more absolutely do not want him as PM at all and will probably be livid if he gets back in

If Boris get in, I suspect the Tory party would end up formally splitting up and a general election would be very soon after.

I'll repost this insightful comment from elsewhere:

I know everything is a little febrile, and people are rightly sceptical but I think it’s very safe to rule out a Johnson return. He simply won’t have the support to get to a hundred MPs. He barely had the support of 60 at his end. Yes he’ll build up an early lead because the ones who will support him are the hardest of thinking so they’ll vomit out a message of support from their empty heads without pause.

There’s likely a lot of behind the scenes manoeuvring with consideration to the more serious candidates. The tories are arseholes but they generally understand parliamentary and electoral maths. They know they spent a ****load of their political capital trying to keep Johnson in post. And they know how that ended. They also, in the main, know that isn’t something they should waste their time with again. To repeat, look at those who have come out in early support of him, it’s the absolute ****wits. The ones possessing half a brain and and more importantly a sense of self preservation, know that he’s a lunatic and he still has to face a standards committee enquiry. They’re not touching him.

So, on balance, I’d say rest easy if you are one of the people expressing concern about a Johnson return. He’s not a serious candidate. The 1922 know what he could get, and they set the limit at 100 as they knew that was beyond his reach.

Caveat: Who the f*** knows anything anymore? And I’m just a stranger on the internets.

We can only live in hope that this post holds up!

There are two things in Boris's favour:
1. He can win elections (twice London Mayor despite London normally being Labour voters) and one General Election.
2. If anyone other than Boris wins, the clamour for a General Election will be very loud. If Boris wins, he can point to the fact that he actually won the last election, so no General Election is required.

Plus, the person Starmer fears most in a General Election is Boris.

Papers want general election vs Tory papers saying Boris will come back and win. What outcome is most likely?

So which of all those MPs who voted for Sunak previously will switch their votes to Johnson and, more importantly, why? Any that do will be nakedly displaying their cynicism and contempt for the general public. As for previous Truss supporters, if they're delusional enough to think she was PM material then who knows what they might do? In the meantime the country disappears down the plughole. General Election now!

Penny Mordaunt would be my choice.

Whilst shes unproven territory, she comes from a no BS background and knows what its like on the high street. I suspect it wouldnt go to her head and she would be a bit more level headed in approach… she wouldnt tolerate much of what weve seen.

The thing against her is the lack of that old etonian background, she isnt a member of the club and probably wouldnt take advice of the establishment without questioning why…and they arent going to like that.

Returning Boris.. omg it‘s like having the ringmaster of the circus taking a break whilst liz truss comes out at half time to sell ice creams, before the show continues. I’m just left wondering who gets fired out of the canon before the final act.

Shes certainly level headed and can think on her feet but can she surround herself with enough capable ministers who would work with her if there are even enough left. Ultimately though the electorate are being treated with utter contempt with Brady behaving like some kingmaker from the middle ages with utter disregard for the electorate. I utterly hope they are wiped out when the next election comes like the progressive conservatives were in Canada in the 1990's.

She, or indeed anyone, should learn from Liz Truss's mistakes, and not do anything too quickly without warming people up (the City, the media, MPs, the electorate etc), and not make any U-Turns. U-Turns show a sign of weakness and all the vultures smelt blood after that.

Jeremy Hunt's opinion, even if only stated in private to his colleagues, may be the deciding factor. And I can't see Hunt going for Johnson.

The warning signs were obvious.
That trip to Russia showed she didnt have her own style, wouldnt listen to her own advisors and goes in on head on transmit mode without recieving ears.

The Russians simply lead her into a trap in that press conference and exposed her for what she is.

The fact Hunt excluded himself and is keeping on with budget changes should keep stability with markets and leave no room for the replacement to change anything now.

Can't disagree too much with the first part of that statement, although (Sir Graham) Brady's role does seem to me to be more of an umpire than latterday kingmaker.

Really they've changed the rules to ensure a replacement is found quickly to ensure the Tory candle isn't snuffed out. If the unions tried to behave like that they would trump up legislation to block them. They are treating us with contempt and treating us a serfs.

They are going about it as if it were a business….
if the ceo quits the board replaces them.

its more embarrasing to Liz..

not many execs get appointed, see off the queen, meet half the worlds leaders, destroy the currency, damage the economy, cause decades extra borrowing, set up longer higher inflation, higher mortgages, stagnate the housing market after 2.5 decades and then exit within a month and a half….

Some dont do that in 2 decades.

she will be compared to the great storm of 1987… people will be feeling this for decades.

What she puts on her linkedin profile will be interesting.

There are no good candidates and the party is finished as a governmental force anyway. It is merely a matter of how the eventual collapse happens.

no but like most of them who receive payoffs for failure aka Northern Rock et al she will be eligible to receive the Public Duty Cost Allowance (PDCDA) and is worth up to £115,000 a year. What would any of us get the sack, no reference and impoverishment for the rest of our lives. As the former PM said "Its a disgrace"

There are shades of what happened in Australia where Kevin Rudd ousted Julia Gillard only to be defeated in an election months later.

Looking at that spreadsheet, currently Johnson 50, Sunak 39, Mordaunt 17, it is noticeable that the "Johnson" column contains about 15 anonymous entries, whereas the other 2 have full lists of names. How accurate is it?

I don't think it will be Johnson. Look at how lots of MPs turned on him towards the end - they won't want him back.

What I suspect is that if it looks like he might make it through, the other candidates will combine their efforts (so a joint ticket of Sunak as PM with Mordaunt as deputy) to keep him out.
