Why does Avanti serve Poulton-le-fylde and Kirkham and Wesham?

These two stations are served by a single weekend service to Preston operated by AWC, although before they were served by a daily weekday service from London.
Is there any particular reason why they are still served? There doesn’t seem to be much point in it.

Of to spin the question the other way is there any point taking those calls out in that service what does it gain?

I mean it is odd for them to be served only once a week but what i think is more bizzare is the short distance of the service Blackpool North to preston. Must surely be Avantis shortest distance passenger service.
Whats perhaps more odd is that once at Preston it runs ECS all the way down to Crewe. Surely it would make more sense to run it in service all the way from Blackpool North to Crewe rather than duplicating the countless Northern services from Blackpool to Preston. Granted still better than running it ECS all the way from Blackpool. Is it perhaps related to train crew, does a Preston train crew work this service?

There was a service that went to Euston from Blackpool in the early mornings that when operated by a single voyager that made these stops. Now that it’s a double they don’t serve these stations. This is probably a way for them to say that they still serve these stations.

Preston are the only depot that work to Blackpool so yes, it is a Preston train crew.

One, because it is operationally convenient to get them out of the way at Preston, and two, even if they don't carry a single passenger to/from those stations ever, Avanti are still entitled to (in this case a very small, tiny amount) of the entire farebox revenue to/from those stations as a result - so even an empty train can be marginally profitable.

Cancellations aren't generally factored into the revenue apportionment either, unless a competing TOC challenges it - so Avanti still get the farebox split regardless.

Does also have other benefits in that Network Rail (and the station operator, Northern) has to maintain the infrastructure to support the station call - so in the event of an emergency, failure etc, the entire platform/other infrastructure is useable - compared to some where half the platform is abandoned/overgrown with vegetation.

Given Northern and their Sunday issues in the North West it will probably come in handy for passengers.

Secondly - why doesn’t this call there when it’s only a 5 car? https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C21851/2024-10-03/detailed

It has the time surely given the Preston dwell.
It used to. I think they removed the calls so a Pendolino can cover it if required.

Originally it was in order to provide a through service to central London for office hours. Obviously that's not been the case for years now, these are a relic of that.
