So I am asking it to take me from Fenchurch Street to Paddington tomorrow morning... its top suggestion is to walk to Aldgate, then get the Metropolitan Line to Moorgate, and change there to the Elizabeth Line.

Why would it suggest that rather than getting off at Liverpool Street and changing to the EL there? I mean it's the same stop is it not?

Maybe you don’t have to walk so far at Moorgate.

I had similar a few weeks back. Rotherhithe to Kings Cross.
My chosen route - Overground to Whitechapel; change to Hammersmith & City to Kings Cross. One short walk. Easy.

TFL route planner - Overground to Whitechapel, change to Elizabeth to Farringdon, change again to H&C/Circle to Kings Cross. I'd probably end up joining the same (or, worse, a later) service at Farringdon.

It'll be based on the exact timings, as the H&C beyond Aldgate East isn't all that frequent (comparatively).

CityMapper definitely seems to be doing some odd things recently. Checking my commute this morning, it suggested I started by heading to my local Overground station even if I set the start point to right beside a bus stop with services towards my nearest tube station.

If paying a single fare that'd save you a quid and a bit.

Well I tried Moorgate this morning, didn’t feel like it was that much shorter an interchange but it wasn’t unpleasant

Fair point. Not sure if the 10 minute longer journey is worth it though!
There must be a reason why it thinks it is quicker, I wonder if there's been a change to connection or walking times somewhere.

Citymapper does sometimes prioritise fewer changes against speed if there's not much in it, is the other option further down the list?
