Hi,

I have a 16-25 railcard.
I would like to sample the Doncaster-Cleethorpes line, Barton line and Brigg line hence I am asking for this Saturday.
What is the most cost effective way of doing this?

I've tried piecing Wigan-Stockport-Sheffield-Doncaster-Cleethorpes together in sections but it's not really much of a saving against a Wigan-Cleethorpes return before I've thought about adding Barton and via Brigg too.

I welcome anomalies and debatable tickets if you wish to PM.

Thanks in advance :)

A £22.60 Sheffield to Barton-on-Humber offpeak return is valid via Brigg or via Scunthorpe. A £5.70 Habrough to Cleethorpes will get you to Cleethorpes. A Wigan to Stockport return is £4.40. Then look for Stockport-Sheffield Advances at prices from £5 one-way.

Total from £42.70 before railcard discount, so with discount a total from £28.20

Can you wait a week or two and get hold of a Northern Dayrover(no railcard discount, I know)? If so, provided you can tolerate the Hope Valley stopper or a 158 on Preston-Leeds, you'd just need a Manchester- Habrough advance one way.

Anomalies and debatable tickets?

Until very recently, Brigg to Cleethorpes tickets were routed either "Any permitted" or "Not via Doncaster". I don't know if you could have taken this a little too literally and argued that this meant that the "Any permitted" tickets, which are cheaper, were valid via Doncaster?!!
Now "Not via Doncaster" has been replaced by "Via Brigg". How you are expected to start your journey at Brigg and go via Brigg I do not know.

I'll PM you a less dubious ticket that may be of use, combined with other people's suggestions.

GM Wayfarer and a Chinley-Cleethorpes return? You'd have to do the stopper to Sheffield mind.

£11 Wayfarer
£14.40 Chinley to Cleethorpes/Barton.

Further to my earlier post, I have just noticed that Routeing Guide easement 000005 may mean that my earlier post was wrong to suggest that a Habrough-Cleethorpes ticket would also be needed.

Thanks for the responses. I think the PM is a very good shout and I'll read up about that easement. I may be tempted to drive to Bredbury before jumping on a train so I can avoid the Wigan-Manchester bit which is ever so familiar to me.

No but Grimsby - Cleethorpes ticket would be required as you can only double back as far as Grimsby.

Note that I have not seen this easement implemented by journey planners for quite some time now.

I was able to get itineraries itineraries via Cleethorpes (and via, or not via, Brigg) for journeys to Barton-on-Humber, on the VTEC journey planner.
