So, a higher priced advance single can still be sold, which will presumably include a seat reservation or counted place, but not the cheaper walk-up ticket for the exact same train? This does seem to be something of a 'rip off'. If so, how is this justified?

I think the issue was that when I checked, the Newcraighall to London itineraries are such that the trains from Newcraighall don't necessarily feed into the journeys that still have advance reservations (1937) from Edinburgh without intervention. (The 1937 gets overtaken by the last Lumo at 1958 which is also 'full' from Edinburgh.)
