Wolverhampton to... any decent seaside resort

Afternoon folks,

Long-time lurker, very rare poster.

I'd love to plan a trip from Wolverhampton to ... any decent seaside resort, really, and I've been banging my head trying to find a journey that doesn't take an inordinately long time.

Does anyone have any idea which seaside place might be easiest/cheapest, rail-wise?

There'll be two of us travelling, myself and my girlfriend. I hold a nTrain all zones pass (though it's probably not going to be much use here), and we do plan on getting a two-together railcard in the near future.

Any thoughts?

#Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, oh I do like to be beside the sea...#

Thanks.

Weston super mare, the cambrian coast, the North Wales coast, Blackpool. Of those, the journey to the cambrian coast is the nicest by far.

Well as I'm sure you know, the Cambrian coast is one of the traditional favourite destinations for people living in Wolverhampton & the Black Country.

Are we talking day trip, long weekend, or a full holiday here?

Aberdovey's nice, fabulous setting, but might be too quiet for some? If you do go to Aberdovey, be aware it's often better get off at the stop before (Penhelig, request stop, make sure you tell the Guard you want to get off when he checks your ticket) which is more Aberdovey, than Aberdovey!

Further along there's Barmouth - much more brash, or further still to Harlech if you like castle-exploring. North of there the line is presently closed for bridge reconstruction, but even the bit that is open is well worth a ride for the fantastic coastal scenery from the train windows.

And all on a direct train from Wolverhampton........

Thanks folks for all your responses so far - and in such a short space of time too! I was aware of the Cambrian coast (I've been on Aberystwyth-bound trains between BHM and WVH many times) but the more specific information about the places on the line coming out here is just great.

And the suggestion for Southport, see, that's one I never would have thought of! Looks like it's worth serious consideration. :)

I'm thinking probably just a day trip, or possibly a weekend, if both of us can wrangle the time off.

I am from North Wales - Conwy and Llandudno are winners but as per my original post I would "Go West"!

Spent many of my childhood holidays in Aberdyfi, as it should be called. I fully endorse it and the whole of the rest of the area, but I think we could be more specific if you told us what kind of attractions you want in your seaside resort. Just a quiet beach and a fish and chip shop, or amusement arcades and a pier etc?

I would hazard a guess that Southport via Liverpool utilising a cheap LM fare and an all zones saveaway may work out cheaper and would certainly offer a far greater choice of trains (every 30 mins Wolves to Liverpool, every 15 mins Liverpool to Southport)

And if you are lucky, you might even glimpse the sea from the end of the pier......- after a trip on the pier "tram".

I think Southport is a good suggestion. Definitely avoid Rhyl and Prestatyn. I'd also consider Poole.

What is an 'inordinate' amount of time though? Scarborough is a great seaside resort and highly recommended here.

The Cambrian, yeah it's fine but I've done Aber and Borth too many times to count. Much better, in my eyes, would be Mumbles on the western side of Swansea. The Gower further on is also very nice to go to but in terms of general family stuff Mumbles wins.
