And why did they overpaint the old lines in grey, rather than same colour as platform edge stones.

Surely a dangerous idea for those with impaired sight, who might now get confused by multiple lines whilst attempting to alight, and misjudge their step.

When they clean off painted road markings, they are "usually" burnt away with a butane torch.
Which stinks if you get downwind.
It is also a "hot" process.
Both of which might not be advisable underground, in my opinion.

Unlikely to be anything but preparation for 2024 Tube Stock.
Exactly this. As part of the Piccadilly Line Upgrade (OPO CCTV) modifications to the yellow lines at:

  • Hatton Cross e/b
  • Knightsbridge w/b
  • Russell Sq w/b

are require to provide unobstructed platform train interface (PTI) views for the new 24 stock.

So having lines for stock that isn't currently running is deemed more important than potentially causing sight impaired people to misjudge their step and potentially trip due to multiple coloured lines.

Have they given up on passenger safety on Piccadilly line ?

Slightly off-topic but the yellows at Bristol Parkway have recently been moved the other way (now more than a yellow line width closer to the edge).

I was consulted upon as a Piccadilly Line Train Operator to find out whether it impacted on the current monitors for the 73 Stock. I don't know if the lines are temporary, or if LU are consulting visually impaired people during the process. Do you?

Of course not, this is just hyperbole.

I've done some further digging for you.

The new lines are subject to a 4-6 week safety trial.

All is explained in Traffic Circular 3, pages 6&7. You are free to do an FOI, which will be redacted, but probably not that part.

Are you visually impaired, or speaking on behalf of the visually impaired?

Not me personally, not on behalf of all impaired, but I know someone who is and they have described their problems. Sorry I can't remember the optical name of the lack of sight spectrum they have.

As someone who is visually impaired and know many others who are, you're making this out as a much bigger issue that it actually is.

For the majority, the yellow line contrasts with the surrounding surface, rendering the painted over grey line irrelevant, even more so after it's been stood on a few times and it's lost it's gloss.
