It's been a long time since I've used the Coastliner from Whitby to Leeds and given how scenic it is, I was planning to do it on Saturday.

Can anyone that has used it recently comment on loadings?

I'm planning to get the 17:00 from Whitby to York, given the deckers used are quite low capacity, is it likely to be full and standing?

On a sunny day, not everyone gets on.

Edit: More accurately, it has happened that not everyone has got on.

I used it in April and it was was quite full. There were very few empty seats on departure from Whitby but certainly no one standing. Midweek in April is hard to compare with a Saturday in July. On the day I travelled it was very late running as it didn’t arrive into Whitby until around 1740. I don’t know whether late running is a regular occurrence or if that was just unfortunate.

This is what concerns me, as I'd have a train to catch at York.

Looking at Bus Times for the last couple of weeks, the 1700 departure to York, it's ran to time and has been one of the Sky Class E400 MMC's which look a higher capacity...

I've sent Coastliner a message on Twitter to ask for them to advise.

Just get there early to ensure you are closer to the front of the queue than the back, then I’m sure you’ll get on

It would seem the timetable changed yesterday and the 17.00 Whitby to York is now leaving at 17.45

With a new relief journey as far as Malton.

Oddly they don't seem to have updated all the feeds, so bustimes.org and Google maps are incorrect.

It’s good that they’ve reacted to this overcrowding on the last bus and have now provided a duplicate

The relief journey certainly makes sense. Good to hear.

When I checked Bustimes.org yesterday, it was still showing at departing at 17:00, it's since been updated to reflect the later departure and also shows the duplicate bus.

All in all, this works out better for me as I get longer in Whitby and a longer connection time in York.

I did the Coastliner services back in June 2021 in that bit where the Covid restrictions were in the process of being loosened but had not been completely removed. I did Leeds to Scarborough one way and Whitby to Leeds via Malton the other (I got another bus between Scarborough and Whitby).

I seem to recall the services I went on probably being half loaded and got nowhere near full and think I might have been the only passenger who did the whole trip from Leeds to Scarborough. The Whitby to York service I returned on was definitley busier.

The key difference is that fares would have been considerably more than £2 back in 2021

My theory was that back then, the passenger numbers were still not back up to full strength as a result of Covid.

This was in the bit where restrictions had been loosened but the social distancing and mask requirements were still in place.

Presumbly some were still nervous about using public transport then (most probably passholders who would likely take advantage of the service) and having to do the whole trip wearing a mask must have put a few people off.

Something strange about this relief journey, it's in the timetable as starting at Whitby at 17:45 as per the regular bus, but on the tracking on Bustimes, it starts at Thornton Le Dale at 18:03...

I thought it may just have been an oddity today, but it's been the same all week.

Link to todays tracking below.

I agree that the relief bus doesn't seem to be tracking, but the 1803 from Thornton le Dale is a separate trip and is in the timetable.

Maybe it only runs as required. They’ll have a good idea how many are likely to be coming back based on how many went to Whitby in the morning and how many have already come back

Poor weather this week and the fact the school holidays haven’t started as yet probably means the buses have been quieter

Hopefully you're right.

I've not done the Whitby Coastliner for years so looking forward to a trip later today, from a purely selfish point of view I'd like it to be quiet so I can spread out a bit.

Coastliner vehicles are high spec. The Malton depot currently has for Coastliner services 13 66/68 reg (2016-2018) B5TLs, a 70 reg (2020) "Sky Class" Enviro 400 (which is shared as needed between Malton and York) and 3 62/63 reg (2013) B9TLs - the two 63 reg ones, originally used on the X43 Witch Way service between Burnley and Manchester, carrying Whitby branding and hence meant to be usual on 840 workings but one does not seem to have been in service since April and the other today appears (if the tracking is right) to be on Scarborough workings. The 62 reg one, which originally was new to Coastliner, along with two of B5TLs today are tracking on the Whitbys while other B5TLs and the Envro 400 are showing on the Thornton-le-dales.

The 840 & 843 interwork with each other at the Leeds end, so there isn’t any particular allocation to either service
