Took an entire band from Leeds to Liverpool the other week, and I meant the entire band! With guitars, drums, amps, PA, lights. Everything!!!! Filled the bike rack, but I didn't charge them. They were due to play a gig at a wedding but the van had broken down and the train was a last ditch effort to make the gig. Having shelled out for the standard full fare tickets they were gonna lose out over the money they would hav earned at the gig. I took pity on them and helped stow their kit. With everything boxed and packed up they took up no more space than most Asian arrivals at Manchester airport!!!

I've carried a fish tank on a train between Hereford and Aberystwyth. It was however both totally empty and only a 30l tank which will fit in a decent size "bag for life".

Must have been fun changing at Shrewsbury, if you had the usual eight minute connection time and tunnel platform change  .

As regards the paint query, I am apparently a criminal then . There's no other way for a non-driver to get from B&Q on the out-of-town trading estate back to Southport other than on a bus! (Well or a taxi, but I'm not that extravagant!) Luckily it was in an opaque canvas bag so no awkward questions were asked. Looks like it'll have to be Wilkinsons next time I need some .

I own a Jackson King V, one of my pride and joys, and I don't have a hardcase for it, only an assortment of soft bags. I rarely travel with it, but I have had to take it on the tube and back home. But it doesn't fit in the bags I have, so I have traveled with odd bits of guitar sticking out. It takes a bit of wiggling to get in to a seat with me. I won't put it anywhere where I am not, and have stood before to make sure I'm not parted with it.

Other than that I've only travelled with the usual holdalls and rucksacks etc.

My mate has an expensive mountain bike that was in pieces and somehow he took the whole thing (with fancy tyres, frame, suspension and all the replacements) from Cambridge to Enfield with a chance at Cheshunt.

I remember seeing a passenger waiting for a train in Poznan, Poland carrying a new WC pan. Not sure if he was planning to use it on the way home.

Not a train, but a friend of mine has a preserved bus and went to a scrapyard near doncaster and got a seat cushion for his bus. He used the bus service to travel home and as he got on carrying his new seat cushion the driver told him he didn't need to bring his own seat!!

About 7 years ago there used to be young woman who would regularly be squeezing herself and a double bass case onto extremely busy 313's at Hornsey heading into Moorgate in the morning peak.

I was on an away day with senior management from FCC and HSBC Rail UK (to discuss the next 12 months plans for HSBC leased FCC operated fleets) around the same time and the 313 fleets and their overcrowding was being discussed, along with solutions such as shoehorning in an extra carriage liberated from the unused 508's, and I suggested to the FCC Engineering Director that finding the double bass carrying person and having a word would be a good 1st step to easing overcrowding.

Never saw her again after that......

Did anyone ask her if she could get it under her chin? ;)

Back in the good old days of loco hauled trains on the Waterloo to Exeter route, I took a double bed from Waterloo to Tisbury.
I made unoffical arrangements beforehand and offered a suitable tip. The driver even stopped the train specialy with the gaurds van on the level crossing in order to unload the bed.
Dont think that could be done on a 159.

More recently I took over 300 kilos of batteries on a train, not that bulky but the weight was over twice that permitted, for 2 passengers.

In the NRCC it states 'animals must be conveyed in a fully enclosed basket or pet carrier'. I know that these would be for cats, but what else are they allowed to carry as 'animals' can mean any animal!

You mean that for the past ten years I've been illegally taking my dog with me on a train (two trains actually) when I go to see my friends in Eastbourne? In his defence he doesn't play "music" on a mobile telephone, he doesn't get drunk and throw up, never complains when the train is late or delayed and he's very quiet. In fact, in many ways he's the ideal passenger - but he wouldn't take kindly to me bundling him in a carrier cage.

Many years ago it was rumoured that a group of students had taken an upright piano onto the Central line of the London Underground. Whether this is true or not I don't know but it was allegedly found at Holborn and treated as lost property.

I have seen a real Christmas tree, still in the wrapping and being carted around in a 'granny trolley' (only description I can think of!), in the van of a GC power car a week or two before Christmas a few years back!
Also had rats in cages and I think a snake as well on one journey!

Best one was whilst on the platform at Kings Cross, a group of lads walked past with a 26" TV box and an xbox box. On going through the train later on, the TV was against the window and they were playing something on the xbox!!

I took a flat packed Ikea bookcase with a friend from Bletchley to Luton via Bedford. Trying to get it on a 153 was fun to say the least!

Good times!

I seem to recall boarding a southbound train at Enfield Chase once to find a small tree in the doorway area. Presumably it had come from one of the many garden centres at Crews Hill two stops prior in the train's journey, as aside from a few hours a day the train is the only public transport option there.

My dad always said that the Aisian flights had loads more luggage than other airlines. (He was a baggage handler) and like when my mum went on her own once to the Philippines , went with a suitcase, came back with 2 suitcases, a massive rice-cooker and a few other boxes. Dad nearly choked when she said how much she had to pay.

Back on topic now, as mentioned in the "things people try to take on trains" before christmas, I have seen somebody with a wheelie-bin on a merseyrail train and seen an Asian family get on an ATW train with pots and container full of food. Dressed for a party by the looks of it.

I know two people who carried a couple of small "lampposts" (traditional tallish garden ones, so not nearly as big as municipal street lighting columns, but still pretty awkward!) on a 378. They had to hold them sort-of-diagonally!

I've also heard of a man who insisted on carrying a very large number of balloons on a 377 in the evening peak out of London Victoria, someone who carried two folding chairs onto a 378 and proceeded to use one... oh, and there was the time when I went on a jaunt from Buckinghamshire to Surrey with a suitcase, a couple of drybags, a pillow (in a mesh bag) and a large bag full of bread rolls.

A wheelbarrow loaded to the bows with bags of compost along the East Coastway line. I recall the chap who brought them on exited at Pevensey & Westham.

I've also seen a concrete bird bath in Shropshire and the biggest CRT monitor in London on the Northern line.

Slightly tangential but completely true: I once carried a live goose on a bus for about 45 minutes. But I was given it to hold by the driver, rather than bringing it on myself.

It's a long story....

I was once on an Exeter city bus which stopped, driver got out, walked intio a plumbers' supply shop, and emerged with a complete sink unit which he stored below the stairs [it was a two-man 'decker with front door]. Saved coming out for it after work I suppose, but it all seemed a bit 'On The Buses'.

Paint is prohibited on Arriva busses in Merseyside. There are signs clearly stating this. Not sure about other bus operators or train operators, but it is flamable...

I've also seen a MAHOOOSIVE dog on merseyrail services, it is so big, it cannot fit within the rather large bike area on a 507/8. Plus it stinks the carriage out!! :( It has slobbered on a large number of people, I'm suprised nobody has complained :)

What is it about Merseyrail and dogs?

We travelled Liverpool South Parkway [[stn]LPY[/stn]] to Southport last Saturday (58 min journey), during which 5 different dogs travelled just in our coach!

Scousers version of walking them I suppose .

Right, it's all the fault of this thread, as I'm sure it wouldn't have happened otherwise... I have just bought, and will be travelling from Southport (popular place on here isn't it? :D ) to Hereford tomorrow, with a bulky and heavy memory foam mattress topper (luckily only a single, but still a weight) in a "granny trolley"! Goodness knows how I'll manage with two changes (LPY and Crewe) - hope the lifts aren't out of order.

The granny trolley is green with white spots. If anyone from on here sees me, do say hello :D .

I'm looking forward to seeing this on NRE...

"Due to a problem onboard a train involving a trolley after a person was encouraged to board by members of a railway forum, services are subject to delays of up to 30 minutes."

Does it count if you take the bulky item on a completely empty Parly?

This is, of course, entirely theoretical! <D

The mattress topper is still vacuum packed and as I said, it fits (just about) into a shopping trolley (although I like the term granny trolley better ). It's more the weight that concerns me, but I've taken heavier suitcases on trains before. Do guards carry weighing scales?

There used to be weighing scales at most stations in the olden days! I though you were carrying a full size mattress!!!
