Virgin Trains abolishes cheaper First Class 'Advance' fares in 2015?

Probably they did this to maximise their profits. It's a myth that you always get the cheapest fares by booking the furthest in advance (not just on the railway, it's also true for airlines). If you can find any claim from Virgin unambiguously stating this, it might be worth complaining to the Advertising Standards Authority.

This is very concerning. As you may have noticed I plan to go to Bolton every weekend. If i cannot get an advanced 1st class ticket I will have to stop my plans :(

You're going to Bolton and it's the class of train getting there that's putting you off? <D

(I speak as someone who happens to be going to Bolton on Saturday. Briefly.)

I live in Bolton and if someone thinks standard class is slumming it, he should walk round the town centre! Don't expect the journey from Piccadilly to Bolton to be the quickest, there is a change of horses at Clifton which takes a while.

Luckily on Monday us locals were treated to a bloke performing with his organ near the town hall steps. That goes down as entertainment here, we're hoping one day we'll get electricity and television

That'd get you arrested round my way.

I'm coming to see a singer. I wonder what she'll plug her amp into?

Well, if it's the Dog and Partridge, not a lot as the wall with the plugs in was demolished by a passing motorist last week ;)

Place is now closed so I hope your gig's not there!!

Oops. No, I'm at the Railway (appropriately). But won't be travelling there by train as I can't get home after the gig if I do.

Fri/Sat nights there are night buses back to Manchester and some night trains out of there, in fact the night bus is a very tidy £3 last time I used one! But if it's The Railway in Bromley Cross then it's a heck of a taxi-fare to get back to Bolton!
Enjoy, as it's in one of the better areas of town - it's near the way out <D

Indeed - and the trains back from Bolton to Manchester carry on fairly late. But I need to get back to West Yorkshire so am constrained by that - I'd have to leave about the time the band will come on to get home by train :(

Managed to do my last two gig visits entirely (last weekend) or partly (the weekend before) by public transport and will be getting to Nottingham and back on Tuesday next week for another by train. All my gigs seem to be coming at once!

It is Bromley Cross! Hadn't actually planned the trip properly yet - hadn't realised how far out of Bolton that is - decent last trip back to Manchester at 2328 from there but I wouldn't get home until 0920 on Sunday by train...

When is the gig - might pop up and watch!

A surprisingly late start at 2100! Given how busy tomorrow's going to be, that might come in useful (need to collect parcels from depots in Morley and Keighley without the use of the wife and her car!)

My wife was a fan back in the day. And randomly bumped into the lead singer on a Chiltern train in 2012.
