How to calculate my train miles covered.

IS there a website or piece of software that can be used to work out how far I have travelled on a particular journey?

I know that I could look at the distance between 2 places on Googlemaps or something but that won't give me the miles covered by the train I was on.

It's a pity someone can't make something as nice as Flight Diary (though I know calculating Great Circle distances is easier then rail mileages)

Also Something that gives a decimal option would be nice rather then trying to convert chains!

It is indeed.
There must be a relatively easy way to work out the distances - maybe I'll go into my local station and ask if they have a list of distances to/from the local stations... see what they say

How did you get it to show up?? I'm trying to find it again for another part of the trip and can't get it to show

Took me a while how to get mileage. The way I did it I used the "simple" search and selected the train from the result. Then I found a small word "detailed" and, hey presto, when I pushed that mileages. I wonder why it doesn't show mileage if you actually use the detailed search in the first place?

It doesn't for all trains, generally those that are longer services. For example, although this is in advanced/detailed mode, 1V50 (Edinburgh - Plymouth) does not have any mileage data: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P30927/2015/01/20/advanced

1V44 (a shorter service - Leeds - Plymouth) however does: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P30907/2015/01/20/advanced

Easy. 1 chain = 0.0125miles.

It's not supposed to be accurate, it's supposed to match the data used by Journey Planners. Any relation to the true mileages is entirely coincidental
