The death is fast and furious!

George Micheal has died.

Ex-Wham singer George Michael dies

Singer George Michael has died aged 53, his publicist has said. The star, who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home". Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Slightly ironic given that Last Christmas was one of his biggest hits.

That did cross my mind too. Very sad though - definitely put a bit of a darker feeling to today's Christmas Day. It's not the only famous celebrity death by a long way this year, and every death is sad. But I doubt many can match George Michael in the influence and number of people he touched. And the fact that he was so relatively young and (as far as I'm aware) no recent reports of ill health make this seem very surprising.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Definitely affecting a lot of people: If my Facebook feed is anything to go by, the story is going viral faster than anything I can ever remember seeing before. Just within my 150-ish FB friends, dozens of shares within the first half hour.

The irony wasn't lost on me either, nor the words from another of his songs (Careless Whisper) which read "So I'm never gonna dance again".

George Michael/Wham were one of the chart-toppers who I enjoyed during my teens, and I think it's fair to say he has influenced the music industry, although at times he has made the headlines for the wrong reasons, with his cottaging incident and drugs. RIP.

I'm not trying to be funny but what the hell have we done to annoy 2016 so much?

This is definitely the year that keeps on taking. Sooner we're into 2017 the better.

It is crazy, and I expect a LOT of people to be shocked when they wake up in the morning to this news!

Alas if anything it will accelerate, many of the people from the 1960s and 70s who became that first wave of idols and celebrities as we know them now are getting older and older.

That said, RIP George Michael, not my branch of music at all but I know how influential he was to music and the impact he had on the gay community. 53 is no age at all.

There have been so many sad deaths in 2016 but this one tops the lot for me. A quite brilliant recording artist has passed away at no age at all.

It was genuinely quite moving flicking over to Sky News earlier to see the news breaking. Such a shame.

Just see that every time 1 travelled between Reading and Didcot and v.v. i was less than 1 kilometer away from the home of George Micheal. With Freddy Mercury living at Logan Place; the closest i was on the western edge of the Circle Line.

Heart failure at 53. Perhaps after all that drug abuse his body just gave up. Mind you, Mozart was 35 and Mendelssohn was 38 when they died. So perhaps the greats do die young.
Mind you, J. S. Bach lived to 65 and McCartney is still going strong. Keith Richards died a few years ago but no-one has the heart to tell him yet!

Seeing as this thread is sort-of an obituary, it'd be nice if someone could fix the spelling of George Michael's name in the thread title?
