Where are the 170s expected to come from? Is there anything coming off lease soon?

Some people need to keep up at the back, Scotrail! and I think the first are supposed to be coming fairly soon presumably when Glasgow-Edinburgh Electrification and Scotrail HST's starts to release 170's.

Aye good luck with that. The way EGIP is going and the delays to that, we'll still have the 170s this time next year...

Depends on how the contracts are written of course. You may need the 170s this time next year, but they may have been forcibly removed. We've seen similar with the GWR>Scotrail HST cascade, GWR could really do with all the HSTs they can get at the moment whilst the IETs are introduced and their internal cascades start to happen, but they've had to release at least two sets.

First of all when will the cascade of 170's to Northern begin?
From what I've heard in theory they should be arriving in December 2017 and in service by May 2018 but possibly before that. Also this is subject to change due to delays getting them off ScotRail but I believe that at least one set is due to arrive very soon to enable training to begin even if others don't start trickling through for a while yet.

Are they all 4 cars what are coming down here?

The ones that should be coming from Scotrail will be coming a 3 car formation I would imagine. Do Northern have plans to turn them into 4 car? Anyone know what numbers are going? They just recently done up 170470 and 170471.

There are no 4-car 170s only a mixture of 3-car and 2-car. Those currently with ScotRail are all 3-car so I would assume will be coming to Northern in 3-car formation and staying that way.

There are 4-car 171s which, to be fair, are basically 170s just with different couplers however none of them are subject to being transferred to Northern.

Another planet...
Thank god they're the ones that are going. Pretty certain these are the ones where Scotrail didn't fit plugs and lack First Class completely.
Presumably those are the ones that were initially delivered in SPTE colours then? Including the few "freebies" supplied as compensation for delays in delivering the rest!

It'll be a big step up in quality for Northern, I've always liked the saloon of the Scotrail 170's and they're far better than probably anything that Northern runs

They'll be used on the Leeds-Manchester Victoria-Southport route and the Harrogate Line.
Harrogate folk should count themselves lucky that their line hasn't been electrified otherwise they would be squeezing into the seats on a 333 rather than chillaxing on a 170.

Or a "DLR Train" ;)

Have you not seen how crowded those trains get? A three car train will not solve the overcrowding issue.

Yes but they will be running 4 trains per hour instead of 2 between Leeds and Harrogate, and one of those trains every 2 hours will be an IET

170s can meet Northern Connect standard, not all Northern Connect services will be new DMUs.
Well yes but from what we have herd so far it doesn't look like they will be using them on Connect services
