Having researched this, a Perth - Edinburgh anytime day return is valid travelling via Stirling or Kirkcaldy.

My question is, would this be valid on all trains via the Fife circle too?

It's valid as far as I can see. Whilst you're reversing at Kirkcaldy, you're not doubling back through a station and it is valid. It's shown valid on map FC of the routeing guide (Perth-Kirkcaldy-Dunfermline-Inverkeithing-Edinburgh).

Additionally, a few daily trains run between Edinburgh and Perth via the Fife Circle. (These go Perth-Markinch-Glenrothes-Dunfermline-Edinburgh).

Perth - Edinburgh Group is allowed by routes on maps FC and FK.

FK allows Perth - Stirling - Croy - Falkirk High - Edinburgh Group and Perth - Stirling - Falkirk Grahamston - Edinburgh Group. FC allows Perth - Ladybank - Kirkcaldy Group - Dunfermline - Inverkeithing - Edinburgh Group or Perth - Ladybank - Kirkcaldy Group - Burntisland - Inverkeithing - Edinburgh Group.

Under the Group rules, doubling back is allowed between the members of Kirkcaldy Group, namely Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Markinch.

I can't think of any possible journey/routeing where you could actually take advantage of that though.

Not a very rational one, but if you specify Perth to Edinburgh via Markinch on the NXEC site, the computer takes advantage of Group station status by offering:
NXEC journey planner said:
Perth Dep 08:47 SR
Kirkcaldy Arr 09:24
Train continues to Edinburgh

Kirkcaldy Dep 09:33 SR
Markinch Arr 09:42
Train continues to Dundee

Markinch Dep 10:09 XC
Kirkcaldy Arr 10:16 Dep 10:17
Inverkeithing Arr 10:31 Dep 10:32
Haymarket Arr 10:52 Dep 10:54
Edinburgh Arr 11:01
Train continues to Penzance
It offers normal walk-on fares for this journey.

 There is no point in going to Markinch on that suggestion other than as a "fill-in move"! I believe such a move is valid because of the Group Station move, this is identical to going to Gidea Park on a ticket to Emerson Park on the basis that Gidea Park is a member of Romford Group (as described in a previous topic), however some people believe that you have to be "interchanging" for it to be valid. I don't think the wording is explicit enough to deduce that; I think the validity is for interchange purposes, and it's valid and how you use that validity is up to you. However any guard checking tickets would be confused as to why you are doubling back for no purpose.

Doubt it, not if you told him that you are doing it because you are a rail enthusiast and the manual says you can...
