My loco 1 for day 1

Attachments

OK,

My second steam loco for 2nd. I once had a large steam fleet but alas, all had to go as none were suitable for DCC conversion! My only survivor is a Hornby-Dublo.

That’s a lovely thing.

Day 3

All my Diesel shunters have to go, again as not suited to DCC conversion including a wonderful collection of Wrenn 08s. I just have LMS 7124 to sell.

I have no Type 1s so lets do my types 2s next!

1607115249000.png

An elderly Hornby Class 25, with twin motors, DCC & lights. I also have a second (no pic) converted into a class 24 but with 1 motor as second wasn't capable of DCC conversion!

Day 4

I once had 3 class 31s. Peter has one, another I sold as again not DCC suited

A sturdy Lima loco - easy to convert if you can solder, ideal for my son to drive!

Both very good looking models for their time.

5th for type 3s

Well I used to have a few, but my class 33/35/37s didn't make the DCC programme! Peter has some but 37012 survived to be converted!

I must get a Heljan 33/1

6th is low power type 4 day!

A Mainline class 42. This needed new gears from Ultrascale and a full service to DCC convert. Unlike their steam locos, Mainline diesels are fairly easy to convert

I also have a DC Joueff class 40 that's not worth doing, painted as 40106 in Green.

That looks like a lovely example of a brilliant diesel there :) I've got a Mainline Class 45 which I'd like to convert to DCC at some point so hearing that it's fairly easy to do is nice.
The past few days of my advent calendar have all been merged into one post, annoyingly...

A few years back old Mainline diesels were worthless, but now you can get the spares, their smooth running motors are a bonus. I admit I didn't do mine myself as it needed gears and a full strip down service, but the result is worth it.

@reddragon - I’ve split yours into a separate thread. Love the Warship by the way.

I just saw that but I’ve replied in that thread now if you want to post a new one?

My engine seems to be alright mechanically, but it is missing two traction tyres. Out of the eight axles it has, only two are powered (both on one bogie) and without the traction tyres it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding! :D I'll have a proper look at it at some point.

I just saw that but I’ve replied in that thread now if you want to post a new one?
Thanks for the kind message - it's nice to know people are enjoying what I've done. Thanks again (to @reddragon as well) for letting me make an un-merged post :D

Looks like I've been bumped to my own thread! Probably a good idea @Cowley.

OK day 7 is HST day!

My old Lima HST was a successful DCC conversion. I have a prototypical 7 Mk3s in this set

1607332419553.png

This year, after searching hard I managed to source a new GWR HST pair to make a 4 car Castle set. A lot of searching & bargaining to get a good deal, best achieved mid month before payday when sellers need the £££ :)
I fitted twin TTS sound on this one. Whilst the sounds are good, the speakers are awful in particular the tinny horn sound! I will in time get some decent speakers and make the change.

1607332703883.png

I also have one remaining old vintage Hornby power car used for spares for my 24/25 - a Christmas tree loco!

I've never seen much of the Lima HSTs but that photo is making me want to try and find one - it looks fairly detailed (with the cover bit over the exhaust and some detail differences compared to my Hornby powercars). I've also been looking for a long time for a reasonably-priced pair of Hornby GWR powercars; I think I might try and find the train set version with the old lighting configuration and then paint the front to make it look like the ones in the photo you've attached. I've seen it done so it should be a case of a steady hand and good paintbrush!

The Lima power car became the Hornby railroad power car with a Hornby motor instead

Ah OK - I'd always assumed the Hornby Railroad HST was the old Hornby Railways one. That's quite interesting.

-Peter
The old Hornby ones, like those I gave you are not very accurate at all. Run OK, can pull 1 coach + dummy whereas the Lima pulls 4 + dummy

That's kind of what I thought when I saw that Lima one; I've got one powercar with a motor and it can just about do two old Mk3s and two new GWR ones, but that's it. It struggles quite a bit when the train is on the superelevated curves.

I suppose you could double up the motors in it quite easily, or is there no room behind the cab?

I don't think I could because the front bit of the front bogie sits under the cab - although I'm definitely not experienced with this kind of thing so it may well be possible and I just don't know a way of making it work yet :)

Its easy on the old 25/29 etc, you simply unclip the trailer bogie, cut out the infill if there, connect the wire to the motor & put it in, thats it!

The HST might have a space issue over the cab?

Looking online, the cab fitting is in the way but might be modified?

Around the front third of the front bogie on the HST sits under the cab so I don't think the motor would fit. I expect someone could probably work out a way of fitting a more modern motor into the centre of the powercar to power the front bogie.

You almost got the same HST fleet as I have for my GWR sets.

The Lima models are fairly detailed, certainly on the roof and the bogies. The motored one that I have can easily pull a 2+6 rake so if you a looking for a 2+4 then this will not be a problem but I'm not sure about the Hornby train set version.

Day 8

Lima Class 50. This has the same bogies / motor as the Lima class 55, but not the Lima 37 (that had the same bogies in real life)

DCC conversion was OK. These smaller wheeled bogies are not quite as easy to solder the pick up connection as I found!

1607418990148.png

The pictures I am using are the ones on my Z21 screen.

Today is the day of the Western - day 9

This is my long old favourite Lima Western, probably my most used & abused loco. Its pulling power is amazing hauling massive trains, helped by extra lead weights!

The DCC conversion was easy, but it isn't as quick as it once was. The most durable loco I've owned!

1607505955744.png

My new favourite is a weathered Dapol class 52, fitted with an ESU sound chip, with a good speaker in a proper speaker slot. Drives excellently, sound brilliant, looks real.

1607506077725.png

My first ever Dapol loco!

10th day of advent goes to my long serving Mainline Class 56.

I had the DCC conversion done for me due to the complex lighting set up. It runs so smoothly it is allocated to my longer freight trains.

That Dapol 52 looks stunning, and I'm glad to hear it's a winner too in terms of performance. I'm yet to try a Dapol locomotive.

Great to see your 56 is still going strong too! :)

All of those engines look really good, and I'll echo @Iskra in saying that Dapol Class 52 is absolutely amazing! I've seen countless photos of 'Westerns' in a weathered condition not dissimilar to that and I think that, and straight-out-of-the-factory-shiny are the two best conditions for such an engine. That Lima 52 also looks really cool, as does the 50.
I've never really thought about getting a Class 56 as I've never seen any and as such have never really had much to do with them, whereas I've seen loads of 66s and 68s - hence them featuring on the layout. That one looks really nice and you saying it's a nice runner makes me more inclined to go for one at some point!

@Cowley - can you get that daft annoying feature removed if posted on another day?
Beyond my pay grade I’m afraid @reddragon.
That Dapol Western makes we want to have a cold shower!

Another day, another Lima loco!

The 11th is Lima freight locos!

First a class 59. Another easy fit for DCC but this time due to its need to smoothly pull heavy freight I added a stay alive capacitor. A very good runner as its needed to be!

1607676289703.png

Second is a Lima class 60. Another easy DCC fitting but there are pick up power issues on the trailer bogie resulting in a less than smooth operation. I have the right chip installed to allow me to add a stay alive capacitor to resolve this!

They’re both very good looking models aren’t they.
I’d only recently heard of those stay alive capacitors. Are they easy to fit?

Ideally you buy DCC chips with the socket to plug them in, otherwise its a soldering job.

That sounds pretty fiddly. I can solder but I’m definitely not expert at it!
