I'm confused as to where all the trains fit at night...

GN I recall nothing stabled overnight (2017) at Kings Cross or Moorgate.

They also didn’t stable in platforms at Peterborough, Welwyn, Cambridge or Hertford.

I think the only platform stabling was Kings Lynn!

Correct GTR don’t routinely stable at King’s Cross or Moorgate. They do at Kings Lynn. This has been the case for recent history at least.

There is a 717 which spends the night at Welwyn platform 1. This is a unit which stables early evening in Welwyn Carriage Sidings, then after being cleaned it runs across to platform 1 in the early hours, laying over for a few hours before forming the first up service.

As far as I am aware Purley platform 6, Sutton platform 4, Uckfield and Epsom Downs are not used as berthing points.
Oxted down bay is mainly used during engineering works.
At East Grinstead two 8 car sets can be berthed- one in the siding and one in platform 2.

I remember photographing a 4VEP (for modelling research) that was stabled over the weekend in one of the old London Bridge platforms way back in 1999.

Further to @4REP 's original post and the above by @greaterwest , Aldershot platform 3 can also be added. This is generally one for the 'during engineering work' category though, usually when more stock than usual is needed to be kept that side of a closure and there's no spare capacity in Farnham depot. Recently it housed a couple of 444s when space at Guildford was reduced/unavailable due to some overnight engineering works.

That's one I forgot about! Much like Weybridge's bay platform, you'd probably need to do a full inventory of the unit and check it has all equipment after a night at Aldershot... you might also need to send it to the depot for a new lick of paint.

Not sure about Purley Platform 6, but Epsom Downs, whilst it can be used as a berthing point, it can't be planned to be used due to the lack of security (same applies with Uckfield). Obviously if control decide to use it, as technically allowed, any issues that arise because of it (security related, etc) would be down to them.

Are you sure? I can't see any TFW services which overnight at Manchester Piccadilly? Especially when there is no staff depot nearby. All trains seem to return to Crewe or Chester (or of course further away for earlier departures).

All trains look to return to Cardiff with nothing overnighting in Gloucester.


If you are going by 'where can TFW leave trains', you would probably be right but where they actually leave trains seems to be different to some of the places on your list.

They’re both on the diagrams I have worked off. I would add the caveat that these diagrams are a year or two old.

I’ll double check tomorrow when I have the paperwork back in front of me, it might be something like a Saturday night into Sunday or such.

There has been an odd one outbased at some of the locations on a Saturday night because line closures have prevented them from returning to an established location but in the current Timetable they seem to have been eliminated. Birkenhead North can be added to the list. Llandudno Junction (Platform 2) is weekend only.

They can be parked at any odd place in the case of Engineering Work, even Park Jcn for one last year when Ebbw Vale services were running to/from Pye Corner

I think ScotRail outberth at Helensburgh Central. Whilst not under usual times I have been at the station one weekend when engineering works cut it off from the network and every platform was full of 334's!

As an aside, back in 2010/2011, Oxley depot was either shut or inaccessible and a number of Pendolinos were holed up at Stafford for the night (I arrived to find a set in each of p5, p6 and the Royal Mail platform!)
