So the Class 377442 the 4 carriage will be permanently a 377342 the 3 carriage after the 78842 is written off? I Think it may be scrapped and deemed beyond repaired.
Why? Wouldn't that mess with other people's OCD as the vehicle numbers wouldn't match the set number?377442 had suffered fire damage back in 2016 and has been running as a 3 car Class 377 ever since as 377342, seeing as that was nearly 5 years ago I can't see the multiple unit in question ever going back to it's original formation because if the fire damaged vehicle was repairable then it would have been repaired by now.
In my view to tidy up the TOPS list of the Class 377/3s operated by Southern they should renumber it to 377329 as the Southern fleet goes from 377301 to 377328 then jumps to 377342.
The original 377/3s were converted from 375s. Unit 342 is from a completely different order. So it makes sense to have a gap.In my view to tidy up the TOPS list of the Class 377/3s operated by Southern they should renumber it to 377329 as the Southern fleet goes from 377301 to 377328 then jumps to 377342.
I heard that too. Allegedly the supplier of the original interior fittings went bust after the completion of the 377/4 delivery, but before the fire, so it would have been a non-standard interior if a return to service was required.Apparently from another thread 78842 is at Wolverton although that was late 2019
Looks like it could be.Passed this on the M25 yesterday at Cobham, then again at Coulsdon South heading in the direction of Selhurst.
Assuming this is the correct unit?
Sorry, as you can see, my co-pilot cannot take pictures very well in a moving vehicle.

Good news, thanks for the update.377442 is undergoing checks and will re-enter service 377442.
I think we can change the title of the thread now...377442 is undergoing checks and will re-enter service 377442.

It is identical. It would be interesting to see how different the interior is, unless they've pulled a miracle and made it identical to the original.
What would be the point in rebuilding the vehicle with a unique interior specification? That would make the safety certifications far more hassle than they would otherwise need to be.It is identical.
Someone did a walk through the entire unit last week and posted on Twitter that he couldn't see a single difference; he had been expecting the rebuilt carriage to be a 50/50 377 and 387 interior, but it was pure 377.
There was some misplaced speculation that the design information to rebuild the carriage as it was before was no longer available which would result in a non standard interior. However, given the fleet is undergoing internal work I guess that doesn't really ring true. What would be the point in rebuilding the vehicle with a unique interior specification? Someone uothread said the original interior supplier had gone bust. Presumably they've found some new old stock, or found someone else to make it to the original specification. What would be the point in rebuilding the vehicle with a unique interior specification?
