Just a note that the accident report can be found here. Further discussion of the accident itself should be confined to that thread. Updates as to the unit involved would be welcome on this thread.
5 carriages of the unit have been moved and are now at Hitachi Newton Aycliffe, the remaining 4, the most damaged are at Wolverton Works, still undergoing repair, and will be for some time.

If a very low-speed shunting accident, which involved hitting a train moving away from it, with a closing speed in single-figure mph, can cause this much damage, it doesn't bode well for the repairability of a unit after anything more serious.

As discussed in the thread about the incident itself off the back of the RAIB report, it's because Hitachi designed the stock with higher speed collisions in mind that the low speed crash had such a severe outcome. At higher speeds the normal crash protection mechanisms (collapsible/energy absorbing elements in couplers and car ends) would kick in, but the low speed of this incident prevented them from doing so AIUI

The damaged end of 800109 has now been repaired, and has today arrived back at Hitachi Merchant Park. It had previously been at Millennium Derby and a period of time at Wolverton works.

It joins the rest of its carriages which are all joined up and sat outside at Aycliffe.

Now there will be a period of time where there now needs to be testing and recommissioning.

I'm sure someone crunched the numbers on this and this came out as the best decision but it really starts to feel like it would have been quicker to write the unit off and build another one from scratch (or at least write some of the vehicles off and build them from scratch)!

Suppose the question is how long was it quarentined so the Hitachi and RAIB could do there work, but yes I agree, would of been far quicker to build a new carriage.

After the RAIB did the survey investigations I'm surprised that the driving car did not just get taken back to the works at Hitachi / Newton Aycliffe, as this plant should have all the bits in stock to do the repairs. Along with the jigs to check all of the alignment.

It just seems daft to have to move a train a 1/3 of the way across the county to get this sort of work done, when the works that built it is still in use.

What was the reason for (part of?) it being at Millennium Derby? I'd thought that reading this thread it had gone to Wolverton for the repair work.

Also why then take it to Newton Aycliffe for recommissioning, or is that the only suitable place to do it?

Presumably it’s where the expertise is for the units at the moment from a testing perspective (rather than operational)

Millennium specialise in the type of repair needed.
Back to Aycliffe to reunite with its remaining carriages, and it needed recommissioning at Aycliffe, as they have the space and time to do the required testing. Plus it needs to slot in for modifications like the rest of the fleet have had done

As trains dont crash very often I wonder what Millenium do for the rest of the time. Nice that we still have some expertise though.

Hitachi have a full build schedule so to build a replacement would delay the schedule. They might not have enough lengths of all the different extrusions to make another vehicle and you can’t just buy a few metres, it’s a minimum of half a ton and you get many metres for that with at least 16 weeks delivery. Bodyshell delivery by sea takes weeks and extortionate cost these days. It all adds up to make a new one dearer and longer is than repair.

Wasn’t the unit also held back for investigation too after the incident?

There was a very in depth investigation with RAIB and Hitachi to understand how and why the train acted in the way it did in the crash.

The unit has just completed 8 over night tests runs between Darlington and York

Thanks. I just saw a photo, and appears that the repaired nose is in plain white at present.
