They did. And a very pleasant job of them they made too. Why they didn't just do it for the whole lot I will never know.

Most of the "original seats" on Northern's units were in a pretty pathetic state after the best part of three decades (and the ones with the old Central Trains or Wales&West replacement seats* were even worse). Even now the centre cars of the three-car units are far nicer than the driving cars (thank-you, Northern Spirit). I'd rather a Fainsa special than a unit with those horrible ex-CT seats and cushions compacted so badly that if they were made of coal they'd have turned into diamonds. It wouldn't surprise me if Northern got a bulk discount on Fainsas which made them cheaper than refurbishment of the originals to a satisfactory standard.

The Fainsa seats do at least encourage good posture!

*=I've no idea what these seats were called, and very little interest in learning I'm afraid.

The SWR ones have been re-cushioned, and I was a little bit wary when I heard about it, but they turned out to be perfectly satisfactory for the four + hour journey. No achy bum at all !

It’s a motor change as a repair, not re-tractioning. In any case, the 323 re-tractioning was (like the ABB 465s) a change of inverters/control system with original motors retained.

Yes, I'd far ratther dirty looking, stained flat cloth over moquette. Honest.

As for rock hard, it's impossible to get anything more rock hard than an ironing board.

All the NH 156s were fitted when they were refurbished. The HT ones with the exception of the two Porterbrook allocated ones are just having the USB/WiFi done now. Although progress is slow with only 451/88 done so far.

Only 27 left to do now.

I noticed 158790 has had new CCTV cameras fitted. The same as the 156s are fitted with as part of the digital mods upgrade. The old type cameras in the saloons are plated over. They must be standardising.

Probably sounds a bit of a pedantic question, but is the existing PIS being updated with Northern's voice recordings or is it being replaced with TrainFX like the rest of the fleet? If TrainFX do you happen to know if it's the scrolling LED screens, or the LCD ones that display the text in yellow on blue?

Also, are the additional larger advertising screens at the ends of the carriages (as seen on some of the Sprinters) being fitted?

The Fansia seats are ok for short trips,but I've found that anything over an hour is uncomfortable.
