Sadly not, many a personal life thing happened and among other things that layout ended up disposed of. So I'm just collecting rolling stock at the moment for a future layout.

On that point.

The Doppelstock cab car had a manufacturer fault so I had to pop back to Scograil who were happy to sort it with a replacement. But then I was there without adult supervision so I ended up returning with a beer branded grain hopper and a flat with some bulk cargo containers.

Very nice!

That's fine.

I've just bought a Lima 37 & have my bi-annual leasehold service charge & building insurance due this month :D
This could end up with someone saying "well lads, I've bought five-hundred engines, so no lunch for the rest of the year"...

The thing is, once you build your stock you can buy & sell a lot in a year, so the actual costs are not too scary! My sales subsidise overt 50% of purchases.

Fair point. Whether I'll sell any of my engines remains to be seen - it's always a case of "I might fix it one day"...

Exactly. I've sold over £200 of kettles/wagons on fleabay recently so the costs do work out evenly over the course of a few months.

I think the ScR was the last to employ steam heat on BR as well?
IIRC the last train to be steam heated was a return Footex from Dundee to Glasgow. I'm sure full details must be available on line somewhere. Possibly something to replicate in model form? (Including a train load of Gers fans!)

Yep, I was thinking of a FootEx as the last steam-heat BR train with passengers but I think they were also the last region to employ it in regular use as well?

Any chance of some photos @30907? I’d love to see the control panel.
Sometime next week has turned into 3 weeks, sorry, but here is the control panel - and behind it yet more Hornby Maunsells.
I went into my local shop for some electrical stuff - and discovered a green 3-set and "loose" 2nd, virtually brand new and going for a song (there's not a big market for Southern in Shipley); my new Maunsell Restaurant is in the train too. Slightly too much Maunsell stock for my line really, and I've got some Kirk kits to make up too... sorry, Mr Bulleid :)
In front is my birthday present, an ex LSW Road Van Brake. Must get some goods stock!

The panel is 3-way plus off rotary switches, though I'm only using my Duette ATM, not having 3 hands :).
I need to do the dead ends (6 in the loco for a start) next; some but not all I will insert in the new panel, as I can manage that level of wiring.
Points and signals will be a separate electric "frame" - eventually.

That’s a really lovely bit of work I must say. Even just looking at it I can imagine the kathunk sound those switches make. :)

They do. It was worth waiting for in the end (haven't had the bill yet....).

Decided the dead end switches will mostly go on the baseboard edge after all

I've made a promise to myself to not buy any more locos.

A project to sound fit my existing locos however...

Sometimes its better / cheaper to sell a loco and buy one already DCC sound fitted.

Fitting older locos can be costly / complex and the 2nd hand sound fitted cost premium is often smaller than the sound card cost.

I am toying with that idea.

These are Continental N and Coastal DCC were fairly abrupt with "we fit those on a case by case as Trix and Fleischmann can be absolute nightmares to find space"

Old Bachmann / Wrenn are impossibly complex to convert. Split chassis, no earthing etc. I have even gone as far as buying bodge conversions, such as Lima DCC sound conversions just for the chip. OO of course.

Maybe less locos but higher quality? I reduced from 65 to 40. In the run up to Xmas you will get some good prices on eBay and new, if you are not too fussy, will not cost too much versus inflated eBay sales.

My new models have arrived! Here's the post from my layout thread:
I've managed to buy yet more engines! As I mentioned in the "What's your latest acquisition?" thread, I bought five items the other day, and now they've arrived. Let's have a look at them, shall we?

BR (ex-GWR) 14xx 1421 - Hornby
I've already got an Airfix 14xx, but it's not a brilliant runner and I've been looking to get a more up-to-date version. This is from 1999 according to www.hornbyguide.co.uk and although I've not tested it yet (well I've not tested any of these new models yet), it does look very nice.

GWR 69xx 6976 Graythwaite Hall - Replica Railways
This is yet another duplicate (in a way) of a model I've already got. One of the models from @reddragon was a Hornby 49xx (Albert Hall) - a nice model (in need of some attention!) but not one of the Modified Halls running at places such as the GWSR. This is one of those Modified Halls, and it looks very nice. The front coupling has been removed and replaced with a more realistic chain coupling, but it looks to be purely cosmetic. I certainly wouldn't want to test its strength on a full train! Only cost £25 as well - brilliant.

GWR Express Parcels DMU 34 - Lima
This looks really nice I think. Didcot Railway Centre have got one (albeit a passenger-carrying version), and this seems to be quite an accurate model of the units. The seller only wanted £15 for this as they didn't think it was good quality (printing being the main problem), and so it's a super bargain considering people normally want ~£30 for one! Not tested but the box has a sticker saying "Running" on the front, so that's got to be good, yes? ;)

Hornby Autocoach 191 - Hornby
I think this will be the last autocoach I add to the railway for a while - the layout has three now; a British Railways maroon one, a BR "blood and custard" one, and then this GWR "chocolate and cream" one. It came with the 14xx for a total of £60. Not bad!

View attachment 102410
Siphon G 1478 - Mainline
The final item from this lot - a lovely example of a Siphon G in GWR brown (blimey, that sounds like an auction!). It's heavier than I thought it would be, but not so heavy so as to make it difficult for engines to move. The seller threw this one in for free as a surprise at the last minute - I was going to for it, but couldn't really afford it. Very kind!

And that's that - another set of models to try and maintain
These all came from @NSE_Latchmere on Twitter - he's got lots of things on sale at the moment from a family member's collection I believe.

Hornby 2-HAL from Hattons for £85! Preloved but runs sweetly.

I've decided to put 3rd rail on the platform road on my micro layout & this was waving at me in the online shop window!

I have the 2-BIL & 2-HAL in Southern colours running as a pair. These are really good bargains.

Watch that shoe gear. Do route clearance runs before you run it at speed!
Indeed! One of my Twitter friends & my also old uni friend (who's a modeller too) suggested N gauge track. A little smaller than OO gauge track & sits a bit lower than the Peco 3rd rail kit, but still looks great. Got some 3d printed insulation pots on order as well.

Would this Twitter friend be @NSE_Latchmere by any chance? ;)
His layout is absolutely superb isn't it?

How he manages to make it all so realistic is beyond me. He must have secret helpers or something

-Peter

I’ve just had a look at that railway. It’s very good indeed.
