The Balmoral and The Scotsman spring to mind but you would have to specifically ask for a room with a station view. Both are pricey.

Bit difficult as the station is down in a deep cutting, with a huge flat overall roof across the whole station area. The Balmoral, the onetime railway-owned North British, which used to be the most expensive in Edinburgh, is part of the station but has zero view of the trains.

Try Motel One in Market Street on the corner of Cockburn Street. The upper rooms on the north side must give a good view of the busier west end of the station. Never used it, but noticed it.

The Hilton does, but again it's a bit pricey, requires a specific room request to achieve and all you're likely to get is a view of the top of the glass roof.

Have you tried a Google Maps search for "Edinburgh Hotels"? This will give you an indication of the locations of hotels and their immediate prices. What it won't do is show you the view from the rooms or if there's any obstructions in the way, although switching to satellite view will help with that, and then going to Streetview as well.

Princes Street Suites would appear to be the best option for overlooking the east end of the platforms beyond the roof, but again it's expensive.

I'd agree with the above suggestion that Motel One appears to afford a good view at the eastern end. So, too, do the Old Waverley Hotel and the Mercure City.

This is the view we got from the Hilton Carlton about five years ago. It might be possible to get a view of the eastern end of the station and the nearer tracks from a different room further along.

Excellent point. Is there any (hotel) location either side of the Edinburgh Waverley station site from which you might actually see more than just the station roof?
