Reminds me of the 22 when it used to be every 4 mins until 2009. You would get 3 buses in a row.
Used to be even more than that when it was running with single decks pre 2009 - during the peaks it would fairly regularly have up to 7 buses running together.
At one point, the 22 was timetabled at every 2 minutes during the evening peak.

I think the original route was LRT 58, possibly at the same time running around the Calders. Around the same time as South Gyle Station opened maybe? Before Gyle Centre too. An early branding of MaxiTaxi if I remember correctly, similar to the 59 running around Musselburgh to the old Edenhall Hospital. Leyland Cubs, possibly based on Bathgate built truck chassis, with Duple bodywork and HSC-X registered (159-176). Similar style I suppose to the K reg Dennis Darts in the early 90s. This is all from memory which may be mistaken in places!

What was the deal with Ross mini bus R58? Did Lothian take that over?

Those were the days. You would turn up and just jump on one.

Thanks!

So… more or less like the current 63 route’s southern half & the new tender to Cramond?

I have noticed that service 47 has no XLB's today. Are they being prepared for the Hogmanay services?
Why would they need prepared? There's more then adequate time for them to be cleaned and fuelled (if that's the preparation you mean) between the end of service and the start of the night service.

Service 22 has also been fully B9TL operated today as a result (it's usually 441-465 on a Sunday) and Service 27 with the Enviro 400MMCs. Service 14 using 426-437 which is also normally B9TLs but some needed to stay off service so that they could temporarily move to Marine while the tours run out of Central tomorrow. At Longstone the 33, 34 and 35 are using regular Mon-Sat allocations over their Sunday ones. Some buses have changed routes to allow for the part route running now so allocations may differ, and it won't be long till most buses return to the garage.

Is there any particular reason for Skylink 498 moving to Central earlier on today? (Around 11am).

Certain buses must be getting used specially for tonight. Getting them into position must be a huge undertaking. Do they have H prefixes already installed on their screens or will this need to have been added?

You'd presume the Hanover destination systems are updated in advance to allow for drivers to select destinations with a H prefix. They may even exist from previous years, I don't see why remove them during the year.

The last two 43s from Edinburgh and final 43 from Queensferry are all operated by Central this evening.

They connect to depot WiFi to be updated, Mobitecs have to be done manually.

Don't see why they wouldn't already be on there though I've never cared to look.

Not sure why it would be a huge undertaking to have three or four rows of buses parked ready for night bus services as they do every single night of the year?

This is no ordinary night though, is it? Buses will be departing from more locations than normal and more people will be going about too. All the best everyone!

Buses are sat ready to leave Central, awaiting allocations. Some have come in, been washed and cleaned then queued, so they've not been parked all day.

H-prefix services are left in the destination controller all year, same with the 20 and 63...

You know nothing about bus/garage operations, clearly.
It would be helpful, as one who clearly has a better insight into these matters, if you were to provide some detail as to exactly what goes on in preparing buses for service, rather than dismissing someone's post with a "you know nothing" attitude.

The forum has a wide range of members; some work in the industry, others are enthusiasts and there are others who have a passing interest in the subject of buses and the operations thereof.

Please bear in mind that the sharing of knowledge is one of the main reasons why this forum exists.

There isn't anything more than fuel, wash and clean, it's all pretty simple and it's the same that happens every night during the year.

Happy New Year. I saw this on the way past Central depot just after midnight :)

Currently on the 13:40 8 from Mansfield Place. Full and Standing. They're certainly making their money on this bus anyway!

Great capture. I see 1114 at the front. I was on that on a 21 last Tuesday. I wonder if the open top bus was used for a Hogmanay service? It would certainly have been well ventilated

The costs associated with operating buses at this time of year might dwarf any fares collected. Many will have Ridacards or concessions meaning a bus loaded with 100 passengers as it approaches the city centre may only have taken about £50 in fares or concession reimbursement.
Nevertheless having full buses on New Year's Day is a promising sign of the operating environment recovering after a Covid slump.

402-404, 406, 410 are repainted alongside 951. Nothing off for repaint this year as of yet.
I’m guessing that this means that there are no plans for 401-404 & 406-425 to go to either Lothian Country or East Coast buses when the new electrics arrive in Spring.

I'd personally assume that any transfers to either would need to be newer vehicles so they last until the electrification of the corresponding depots, otherwise they'd need replacing again.

Given that it's 2031 for Livingston, and 2033 for Musselburgh, I'd expect that rules 2014 vehicles out as they will be due to be retired ahead of those dates based on current schedules (assuming they remain the same.)

My money would be on 600s transferring to wipe out the 57/09/10 B9TLs at LCB/ECB when all BZLs are in service, with the '11 B9s staying at City a bit longer.

Including yesterday, three times in the last month I've gone for the ECB X5, 0845 from North Berwick, to find it not running. It seems unlikely that I found the only three occasions this happened. Any idea why? Do Lothian publish a list of service cancellations early enough to be useful, or is there any other way of finding out in advance to save walking to the stop?

Bustimes.org tracks all the buses but I would say that it is only about 90% accurate.
