The comment from the Network Rail person that they want to grow the movement of goods by rail by 8% over the next 5 years struck me as one of the most unambitious targets I have ever heard. If I had ever submitted something like that in a business plan (and I've done a lot of business plans over my career) I'd rightly be told to go away and think again.

Surely depends entirely on the parameters. If, for example (taking entirely hypothetical figures), you know that flows which account for 10% of your existing business are coming to an end (as opposed to being lost to alternative carriers) within the next five years, then to grow by 8% is quite a challenging target.

The latest YouTube episode of Network Rail's "Freight Escape" focuses on Express Freight. It includes an interview with the managing director of Varamis, with a look inside a unit being loaded at Birmingham International.

There's also a view of the mail platform in use by Royal Mail's 325 units at their Midlands Super Hub at Daventry, as discussed in this thread:
https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...ins-to-serve-south-midlands-super-hub.258978/

Did anyone notice the EMU was being hauled out of the platform?
Good use of camera angles…

Varamis has just posted on X that it has just taken delivery of a third unit, with a picture of 321 407.

Possibly two trains will be used tonight. 1M04 already operating southbound, but also 5Z02 in platform 3 at Rugby, arriving from Wolverton earlier and due to leave Rugby at 2005 for Birmingham International to take up service to Mossend at 2149.

Line blocked south of Birmknghsm International at Canley by failed 4L68. Been there since 16:10 and no sign of rescue. Hope it does not mess up any plans for tonight. Only southbound blocked so 5Z02 should be fine. Hope there isn't a plan for one to run south from BHI.

The pantographs are lowered, there is no overhead catenary in place.
What kind of witchcraft is this?
<screenshot shows this clearly>
It might have helped if you actually stated which unit you were referring to. As this is a thread about Varamis and there is a section in that video showing the Varamis set departing a platform I fairly naturally assumed you might just be referring to that.

I thought having put the text ‘There's also a view of the mail platform in use by Royal Mail's 325 units at their Midlands Super Hub at Daventry’ in bold would have made it clear?
Bionic duckweed‽
Having tried unsuccessfully to source some Unobtainium, yes

And now a fourth is announced on X, being 321 428.

In answer to a question about expanding its network it replies “London in March ”

They have not run all week after something happening Tuesday, was terminated at Lancaster; possibly fatality. Anyone know why?

Does anyone have any insight into how smaller operators tend to handle driver duties, do they tend to employ staff directly or subcontract via DRS or another operator with local presence - since presumably it is difficult to manage holidays, illness and indeed very sad circumstances such as this with a small number of available staff, and much easier to resource from a larger pool.

Presumably they have their own very small number of in house drivers, as a previous incident mentioned on post #151 if correct resulted in no services for several days after that.

An interesting article in The Times (not paywalled), about Varamis' expansion to London from next month. The bit that I found surprising was the aspiration to replace the 10 Class 321s it has purchased with Class 800s in due course. I would have thought that would be an enormous risk, although if the units could be retrofitted for passenger use if the service failed subsequently then a leasing company might be interested in financing the rolling stock.

Read has displayed considerable ingenuity to create his venture since he switched from working as a full-time train driver four years ago. He bought ten Class 321 Swift Express trains from Eversholt Rail at a bargain rate, because it was too expensive to upgrade them to comply with new standards for disabled access.

Read wants to upgrade his rolling stock to newer Azuma electric trains and, once he has established routes up the west and east coast mainlines, intends to create connecting services from the West Country and East Anglia.

I would have thought a class 800 would easily be configurable to passenger if required. Just down to adding interior trim and bolting seats into the already present bike holes.

To be perfectly honest the class 8xx platform is an incredibly sensible (only compromised by end doors) idea for Varamis to use. Full bi mode, 125mph capable and virtually go anywhere on the UK mainland lines and enough users that I immagine a leasing company wouldn't struggle to find new homes if required.

Well I suppose at least it would cure the never-ending back and forth about how bad the seats are

Ah, that’s a pity. I was really hoping they would stick with the 321s. Must be a massive risk to get 800s and I don’t expect it to happen for a few years.

If only they could make one vehicle seated we could have a useful overnight passenger service again!

Great to read, very exciting. Will be keeping an eye out to see if they do driver recruitment in the future.
They recruited for drivers within the past year , though one would assume they will recruit again when the expansions happen. Mr Read himself is a qualified train driver, I wander if he fills in when they are short?!!

The article says he does.

I know there was great scepticism about this project when first announced (maybe with just cause from previous such small scale operations) and certainly the approach( for example on social media, comes across as “quirky” to say the least. But in a world of DfT and some big corporates seeking, or so it would seem, to be throttling the potential for the industry to thrive - I find the fact they have made a success of it very refreshing and hopeful. I do think there is huge potential for climate conscious parcel and freight transport.

Good on them.
