I have a ticket with the only restriction being JF (0845 onwards).

I am starting my outward journey mid way along the route.

Does 0845 apply as if I boarded from the origin, or just from the station I am starting at?

The restriction code reads:

Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 08:45.

As far as I can see, there are no unpublished restrictions (which are used by journey planners to give practical effect to restriction codes) so it should be given its ordinary meaning i.e. no train timed to depart before 0845 at any station where you board.

Obvious questions. What's the origin and destination stations on your ticket, and at which intermediate station are you planning on boarding? And is it an Off Peak Single or an Off Peak Return ticket, or even day tickets?

You apply the restrictions, as written, to the train you actually board, at the station where you board it.

There are some cases where there's ambiguity because you are barred from boarding "trains departing London Terminals before XX:XX..." but this is a very simple restriction code, just allowing you to take any train timed to depart 08:45 or later.

It may be useful to have some sort of evidence (e.g. a photo of the train arriving with a nameboard visible) that you did board at the station in question. The restriction code is indeed as others have advised, but you just know some staff would be awkward about it and assume you boarded at the ticket origin, unless of course it's a situation where you would need to change anyway.

Too late now to get that photo this time.
Good to consider for next time.

I don't want to publicly reveal the origin and destination in the case the routing is changed. Some might know what I may be referring to.

I have just realised I have given the wrong portion - the return portion - to the guard to be scanned :frown:

Edit: Spoke to the guard who wrote a note on the ticket.

Thanks for the 'explanation'. To (or from) some mystery location in the West Midlands, presumably? ;)

about a year ago one of my first questions on here (no longer visible for obvious reasons ;) was about a very similar ticket).
