Missed this one from a few days ago;

Thursday 19th January 1984
45134
1307 Paddington-Liverpool LS (from Reading to Oxford)
Booked for a 45/1 at the time. Weird triangular diagram that went Bristol - Weston-super-Mare - Cardiff - Padd - Brum - Bristol.

It was never booked for a 45/1. It was booked for a 50.

It failed to produce 50s because Canton’s 50 training programme stalled then got cancelled. No S Wales depot ever had 50 knowledge under BR.

WR London Division depots didn’t sign peaks but Canton men worked the Cardiff-Padd where a Brum driver collected the loco off the blocks for the 1307, so it worked well.

I didn't know that, interesting. I (and others) assumed it was booked for a 45/1 because it got one on a very regular basis. It still got 47s sometimes of course, and I saw a 31/4 on it once, which would have been speedy for the Cardiff-Paddington leg!

October 83, booked for a 47/4 but a 50 diagrammed as a training loco at Canton during the same period. 47 EH Turn 11 Oct 83.pngScreenshot 2025-01-29 190114.png

Which makes it even more interesting that it was so regularly a 45. On the other hand, according to the diagram if one did the turn on a Monday, it should also do it on Wednesday and Friday.

As per usual, the overnight locos in Scotland had been purloined from the WR. I wasn't complaining about the first one though, a very low mileage loco for me.

This is my first post. I have enjoyed reading this thread for sometime so thought it's time to add some moves.

Saturday 30th January 1988
1Z?? FA Cup Footex from Swindon to Newcastle which did not go to plan.

47497 Swindon to north of Cheltenham near Swindon Rd LC where 47497 failed.
47120+47288 rescued 47497 and took the train forward for a loco change alongside Saltley.
47428 Saltley to Newcastle Central. After leaving Saltley the train stopped again near Washford Heath and another unknown 47 came alongside for somebody to join/rejoin the train.

We missed most of the first half and the Town lost 5-0

47428 worked the return throughout from Manors Park to Swindon.

I was the guard from Swindon to Landor St!

You stopped at Washwood Heath because my relief chose to walk to the rear of the train to get on and was left behind.

47497 failed with a turbo charger fault ( it was making a strange drum beat sound when it ran in to Swindon) and I don't think we got to 60 mph on the single line to Kemble.

I was expecting the Driver to ask for a fresh engine from Gloucester but he wasn't keen.

47120 & 47288 happened to be in High St Loop on their way to Worcester for engineering trains over the weekend but I think they implemented single line working hence the massive delay.

Glad that I wasn't working it back after seeing the result.

Thanks for the info and I hope our fans didn't give you any hassle. I'm just glad that 'Back in the day...' every effort was made to keep going and get us to the game.

Welcome to Frantic February! For those that weren't around at the time, BR did a Young Person's Railcard promotion during the month. Any ticket that was usually up to £15 was sold for a fiver, anything up to £30 was a tenner, and anything over that was £15. The thing was, there was therefore no limit on what you could buy for £15. So it was "Morning - a Saver Return to Penzance via Norwich and Poole please, coming back via Dover, Holyhead and Stranraer. Cheers mate". Instant all-line for £15! When they realised what was going on, many ticket offices refused to sell "silly" tickets (Bowling to Bat and Ball was a classic), but if you had a friendly ticket office clerk (I did), or used a travel agent, you had no problems. And of course, the return portions lasted a month, so it was Mad March as well!
So where shall we go today? How about King's Lynn, especially as there are diversions on and I need the track?

47465 1E43 Newcastle-King's Cross
47581 1H06 Liverpool Street-King's Lynn (via Finsbury Park, ECML and Royston)

Yes, I did some of these (see elsewhere on the thread). Wolverhampton to Wick return, Wick to Penzance return, Glasgow to Fort William/Oban return and careful use of correct portions... or something like that.

Welcome fellow Town fan :) Wasnt that the game where there was some evidence of STFC related people (Macari, The Chairman?) betting on us losing? May have the games mixed up, it was a long time ago (mods feel free to move to gen discussion > football if I'm going off track too much)

Living in Scotland since 1984 I was no longer able to watch Oxford United very often. However an away game at Carlisle United, when I was Rest Day, was an ideal chance.

Saturday 2nd February 1985
86248 1120 Glasgow Central-Harwich Parkeston Quay (to Carlisle)
87030 0730 Penzance-Glasgow Central (from Carlisle)

We won the game 1-0, with a goal by Kevin Brock, and went on to win Division 2 that season and enter the Hallowed Land of the First Division (pre-Premier League, of course).
Also promoted with us, in third place, were Manchester City. Our fortunes have diverged somewhat since....

Just a quick "thank you" from me for the gen regarding the 45/1 working in and out of Paddington. Not my first choice of traction, but I would have taken that for the rarity value.

47585 was the last "proper" 47/4 I needed for 100 miles, so I thought I might as well do it properly, but going to Harwich was definitely pushing it, so...

47585 1E87 Manchester Picc-Peterborough

What’s a proper 47/4?
I always used to think of 401-585 as the "originals" though I did have half a dozen of the 556-585 batch as their old numbers in my spotting days, so I'm not sure how logical that is!
