Welcome to Frantic February! For those that weren't around at the time, BR did a Young Person's Railcard promotion during the month. Any ticket that was usually up to £15 was sold for a fiver, anything up to £30 was a tenner, and anything over that was £15. The thing was, there was therefore no limit on what you could buy for £15. So it was "Morning - a Saver Return to Penzance via Norwich and Poole please, coming back via Dover, Holyhead and Stranraer. Cheers mate". Instant all-line for £15! When they realised what was going on, many ticket offices refused to sell "silly" tickets (Bowling to Bat and Ball was a classic), but if you had a friendly ticket office clerk (I did), or used a travel agent, you had no problems. And of course, the return portions lasted a month, so it was Mad March as well!
So where shall we go today? How about King's Lynn, especially as there are diversions on and I need the track?
