Trivia: Bleakest Terminal Stations

Yes, utterly soul destroying. A halt in the middle of what is mostly an empty, vast carpark with rubbish strewn all over the place. Then you exit onto the road which is full of depressing, or empty shops, drunks outside Tesco Express around the corner and the weather, it’s just horrible. All built on the edge of what used to be the very busy approach to the old central station.

That’s progress!
Last time I went there the jimmy armfield statue up the road was draped in a sea of tangerine scarves . But other wise it's just like the abyss when you alight

Yeah, utterly grim and not a very safe feeling area. That Premier Inn is fairly handy at the end of the old direct line turned road though, and realistically that road is probably of more benefit to the town than having two main railways was, though.

Very obvious that BR were intending the line only to last a few more years once it was cut back.

Last time I went to Blackpool I deliberately used the south Fylde line both to scratch it off and because the staff at South station are much friendlier than at North!

I suppose "no staff" is friendlier than North are alleged to be, though when I used it late last year they were fine.

It's a nice little line, but there really could do with being a bit of a redevelopment of that manky car park and Premier Inn into some sort of leisure park, which could include building a nicer station (a la Wrexham Central perhaps?) as part of the planning gain.

I got off once just to go on the line, then got directly on again

It's not actually terribly sited to be fair - the Sandcastle isn't far from it and there's a decent Wetherspoons too (anyone who is just doing it for the fun of it might as well head there for a pint/food before heading back). But the area actually around it really does need redeveloping urgently - it's just truly horrible.

I went to Colne once, that wasn't too inviting either. Strood is grim, its the Terminus for the Medway Valley line.

I'm sure its changed greatly since my nan was a child there

Certainly the demographics of East Lancashire in general have, though I don't know how that's impacted Colne in particular because I didn't spend very long there. But places like Blackburn are a bit bleak and financially poor compared to years ago when they were the heart of the industrial revolution. Quite sad really.

Just had a nose at it on Streetview and it looks quite nice in the summer sun, to be fair. True of so many places built of that Lancashire/Yorkshire grey stone - Lancaster is horribly bleak in winter but quite nice in summer, for example.

Ryde Pier Head on a wet and windy Monday morning when you're waiting to go to work.
The Harbour could be as bad on the way back as well.

Portrush. If it hasn't been mentioned before, Limerick Junction beater.

Winter, platform facing West, strong cold wind with rain in it blowing at it from a Northerly angle, overhanging roof for "shelter" but pitched up to catch wind creating with no train at the platform funnelled frigidity. And a neat little old lady managing to tuck herself in between the sides of the H section girder holding this windcatcher up and nestle up against the web - downwind for some protection. Most decidedly memorable.

Adwick-Le-Street.

Just on the edge of the village, and it still feels a bit remote from it. A bit of a trek to any facilities in the village too, and on the other side are various industrial parks. I don't know if there's any anti-social behaviour goes on there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was.

Off-topic. Neither of those two stations are terminals....even though they have some trains terminating there. We're talking about real end-of-the-line locations!
Post #1 states "where services terminate". No rules imposed about being the end of a line.

Lancaster's great all year round. Not that much terminates there though.

I like it as a place and the station is OK (getting a much needed refurb now) and plays host to a nice little pub, albeit the outside benches are about as comfortable as Class 800 seats, but the grey stone buildings can feel a bit bleak in January.

Dawn that rules out Millom

Nowt wrong with Millom. Nice little cafe on the platform, Tesco's nearby.

You're better off inside the grey stone buildings in January.

Maesteg is probably one of the worst termini I’ve used in the UK. It has next to no facilities, is run down and feels unsafe with large groups of youths drinking and vandalising equipment.

Crewe is one of the worst I've personally experienced just due to the sense of faded grandeur , unkempt dirty walls with plants sprouting out of them on platform 11 , platform 12 with nothing but basic bus shelters and overgrown disused bay and through platforms connected to it with what seems to be mk1's or 2's rotting in the sidings there. The canopys over plats 3,4,7 and 8 also seem to be missing a lot of glass panels and leak heavily during rain , the areas around the station aren't the best either not exactly the place you want to be hanging around about. Crewe overall needs some major t&c and redevelopment

I agree with this, it's a dump throughout. Can't think of anything particularly appealing about it.

Having spent 45 shiveringly cold minutes tonight at Glenrothes with Thornton, it is now my number 1 bleakest.
