Many thanks for link to the York film (& incidentally the other videos on same You Tube page). The lady announcer at York in 1953 must be a cousin of the Gatwick chap.
Back in the 1950's I enjoyed a couple of late evening trips on a line from Fratton (near Portsmouth) to Eastleigh via Botley...
For many years a curve from Arundel to Angmering has been proposed to increase capacity between London and the South Coast. This would give a link to the Arun Valley route to Horsham for the Mole Valley and Sutton lines to Victoria, London Bridge and Waterloo stations. Also it could provide...
I doubt if anybody else is still alive who remembers Gatwick Airport station when it opened in 1958.
The announcer who spoke with a 'cut glass' accent, gave information in both English and French.
These pictures were taken in 2007. I doubt that the pub was owned by The Great Eastern Railway, but it is close to the old station buildings.

Gosh!! This thread reminds me of the early 1970’s when I travelled by Motorail from London(Euston) to Stirling. Returning to West Sussex from a holiday in the New Forest, I ‘dumped’ the family at home and after a meal drove up to Euston.
The receptionist in the underground car park was...
The automated announcements are particularly annoying on a stretch of line with a string of nearby stations. Try the trip between Brighton and Portsmouth. By the time you get there you are ready to jump into the harbour to cool off!
It would have to be better than that because I always try to avoid London. My current trip is FGWs Brighton Gt. Malvern, then LMs Brum - Hereford to Ledbury.
So my fantasy is steam hauled comfortable coaches (including RMB) Brighton to Hereford via Worcester, with several stops...
Well that really would be a wonderful line connecting several beautiful places.
As I have a dear friend living in Ledbury, makes it even more attractive.
Having been a regular traveller on the line before it closed in the 1960s, my vote goes to the Steyning Line in West Sussex. With main line connections at both ends, a scenic view and stations at villages with good pubs, what more could you ask for?
And the person mainly responsible was the late, great Tom Rolt. So, if he had not fallen out with the canal preservation group, would anybody else have saved the Tallyllyn?
I can add an historical snippet about newspaper trains. My great-uncle Harry McCarthy ran a taxi business and became involved with the transport of papers from Fleet Street to the London railway termini. I can only guess that the date was about 1920. To replace the horse-cart transport of...
