There definitely needs to be a halfway house between letting them off scot free and shouting "CRIMINAL OFFENCE, PROSECUTION!".
Maybe charged the full single, refundable on proof within X days that the passenger had purchased the correct ticket.

I regularly commute in Manchester from the Bolton direction, and while the closest station to my office is Salford Crescent (so I usually alight there in the morning and walk), I buy my ticket through to Manchester as firstly it’s the same price, and secondly it gives me the flexibility...
In my experience the text messages came through at the same time the platform was announced, or so near to it that it didn’t make any kind of difference.
