I was once offered one from Doncaster to Pokesdown... I declined and got a hotel, which fortunately TPE paid back doubtlessly saving a lot of money in comparison

b) Is what I may have to do, but it doesn't seem like I should have to be significantly out of pocket to re-route myself because of a cancelled train

As in UK this only affects online sales and can be bypassed using a TVM (presumably a ticket office too), passholders/Interrail can just board of course

I'm pretty sure CrossCountry are giving out the exact same sandwiches, only the Pizza Twists are exclusive to First.
To be fair I think every TOC does this, I guess they need to differentiate then somehow and probably so that it feels more generous to give out two small Cokes than one standard...
If there's staff around you can ask and should get drinks and a couple snacks. I wouldn't see it as guaranteed on such a sort hop, but you'll probably have a better chance on the return leg if you're quick.
