    Are fine consequences too overkill?

I agree that's a baseline level of training that ought to be organised by the employer for all ticket trained staff.

Northern trialling PRT tickets from ticket machines

I should clarify that this was the type of machine that issues etickets rather than white receipt roll tickets, for any difference this may make (I'm not sure I can immediately think of one, other than possibly shoddy printer quality, given you only get one copy of the eticket and don't seem to...

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

If a human error affects a consumer - business transaction, the business loses out in nearly every situation because the law gives a bias towards the interest of the consumer. If a human error affects a business - business transaction the law doesn't treat them differently. That's simply the way...

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

Can you point out some evidence of anyone doing that on this forum? I've never seen any myself, ever.

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

Ironically that's the one transgression which there is a right to have reversed retrospectively, though of course only on one occasion.

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

Yes, that wouldn't work everywhere, and by definition not optimised both ways around on a journey. It would be workable at one end of nearly all journeys, but that still doesn't capture most people who start at a secondary or minor station.

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

There's an easy way around it, which is to prevent people who don't have the correct ticket from boarding the train. See Colchester as an example where an extra check at the platform often happens, or London Euston where there's often a manual check for Avanti West Coast services instead of...

Do operators get penalised for missing runs?

If a customer sees what they believe is a pattern it's always worth contacting the customer service of the operator to ask for an explanation. If there's no reply, or if the reply is unsatisfactory, that can then lead the customer to a contact to the Traffic Commissioner. Just because in general...

    EMR refusing Scottish money

I was refused in my offer to pay with a Danske Bank note onboard a ScotRail train once. The customer host even said to me after making my drink "that's not our money". After about 10 minutes of waiting around the card machine did work so at least they got paid, but the crew were certainly...

Ideas for improving the CrossCountry timetable

Just to note the typical journey time of the GWR service is 45% - 50% longer than the CrossCountry. This is inevitable given the number of extra stops necccesary. 1714034341 If you look at their times at Taunton you'll see the gaps are rather longer.

Ideas for improving the CrossCountry timetable

This is correct of course. But it's also worth adding that in 2019 a small number of extra services were added between Exeter St Davids and Bristol Temple Meads, most of which ran through from Manchester Piccadilly. A true half-hourly express service Bristol - Taunton - Exeter would of course...

[Trivia] Passenger Trains That Often Carry No Passengers For Entire Route

I think a lot of short / medium distance services similar to this one at this sort of time would qualify on a Saturday or bank holiday morning, but would carry a handful of passengers on working days.
