Going back a while:

St Albans, Grimsby / Cleethorpes, Barrow, and a whole plethora of places west of Shrewsbury, for example.

Much more recently, Slough; also the good folk of Wellingborough and Corby have a shout.
Of course, my early morning brain fog! i have travelled to most of those destinations by an Inter City train.

The ECML was closed north of Newcastle all day due to engineering work so I thought I would try my luck and travel to Edinburgh via Carlisle and Beattock with a Deltic. At this time I was a little inexperienced and thought it would be a good idea to travel to Newcastle in the hope that the service would have a loco change there. That didn’t happen so I ended up having a 47. I should have waited a couple of hours for the next service north which was Deltic 10. I was however fortunate to get No.10 over Beattock on its return south later on the Sunday afternoon.

Up until May 1979 there was only a limited number of loco hauled Trans Pennine services, with four sets of stock being used. It was possible to cover all these services with two return trips between York and Leeds.

That's a bit of a fester at Donny. Did it not make any further south?
I would need to refer back to my notebook for more information (buried somewhere in the house). The 1811 off York would frequently have a late start waiting for the HST from Newcastle/Edinburgh and would prevent me doing my usual move to Newark. On other occasions I would be able to bail out at Retford but today I must have decided to fester at Doncaster.

Having enjoyed my Wessex trip the previous Saturday I decided to try it again picking up two new Cromptons in the process. My return to York was delayed at Peterborough when Deltic 18 was removed from the train. Fortunately No.14 was following on the next service.

I’m not sure what I was doing taking a Class 46 to Doncaster, perhaps I wasn’t aware that Deltic 15 was following on the next service. Anyway more Sunday engineering work meant new track for me with a Hoover.

It was obviously so you could spend a bit more time in the St Leger ;)

These Deltic diagrams take me back.....I did a few Northumberland Rovers or whatever they were called back then. We had to get a return to Berwick from Edinburgh, before it became valid, but they were great value after that. I'm sure someone will remind me of the name and geographical scope. Every basher in the NE had one on the go almost continuously!

I was doing N Wales weekend 40s around this same time, and my bar and buffet of choice became the one in Warrington Bank Quay, and I became very fond of their meat and potato pies, which were a bit of a novelty for a young Scotsman!

IIRC you are referring to the Northumbria Ranger ticket. It was valid between Berwick and York, Newcastle and Carlisle, Darlington to Whitby and the Durham Coast. It was excellent value for money.

This on face value looks like a very good Deltic day, however my last journey of the day with No.4 should have been to KX. Unfortunately it was removed at Newcastle, the question is, what replaced it?

Having spent the previous evening in an Edinburgh pub I had settled into my steam heated Mark 1 compartment with the expectation of travelling overnight to the ‘Cross’ hauled by 55004. It was my second overnight so I quickly fell into a deep sleep. When I came out of my slumber I knew that I must be somewhere on the Joint Line. Worryingly though I noticed that there wasn’t the expected roar coming from the front of the train. My worst fears were realised when I found out that one of Gateshead’s ‘finest’ was now hauling the train to London. Apparently No.4 had been declared a failure at Newcastle and as a consequence I was bowled with nearly 300 miles of unwanted class 47 mileage!

A spotting trip to Derby and Toton. Class 45s all the way today. For those interested 45 & 118 became 45036 and 45068 respectively. It was the last time I had an un-renumbered Peak for haulage.

Judging by the amount of time in Sheffield you might have also visited Tinsley ?.

I remember my first few visits to Birmingham New Street starting late 1974 and encountering a class 45 with a two digit number, no D prefix. Some there thought the 45 and 0 were missing !. When I got home my Ian Allen abc revealed my careful notes were useful. The 45s were the only class I saw with such strange numbers so must have been the last class to get renumbered. They did lose their D prefix before full renumbering and the renumbering was very random compared to other classes.

Puzzled by the first two dates both being on Saturdays but only two years apart. Checked and neither were Saturday - Tuesday in 1975, Friday in 1977.

The plan here was that 47411 was fresh out of Crewe works in large logo livery after overhaul, and to return her to Gateshead, she had run light to Liverpool to do 1E88 to Newcastle.
Somebody in control, however, felt that this was absolutely far too easy. No, let's send her to Poole.

Well done Peter you spotted my deliberate mistake.;)
It should read 1978 rather than 1977.
With regard to visiting Tinsley, I didn’t make it on either of these occasions but I did visit the depot to view the Master & Slave Class 13s. I also remember going sometime in 1976 to view four brand new locos, 56001-56004.

Participating in a few railtours was the order of the day for 19 February

1978
1Z15 RPPR Deltic Ranger supposedly to Kingswear but only got as far as Bristol Temple Meads behind 55018 Ballymoss before being sent back to London. This was because of weather conditions further west.

1983
1Z10 BLS Blue Dragon DMU charter to branch lines in South Wales. It was always a favourite of mine travelling some of the freight lines in that area. This one didn't disappoint though it stopped short of the Ford's Sidings at Bridgend. I never did get beyond the A48 level crossing.

then it was fast forward to .........
2011
1Z41/1Z43 Spitfire Railtours Cumbrian Crusader IV. to scoop required for haulage 20309; 57004; 66417; 66418 for something to do and catch up with friends. The route wasn't particularly exciting.

A spotting trip to Reading in the hope of seeing a few Westerns. I saw several that day but this was the start of my bashing exploits. This was the day when I first travelled behind a loco (D1023) specifically to get it for haulage. It took me another couple of years before travelling behind locos became more of a priority than spotting.

37108 + 37263 Dumbarton C - Glasgow QS 1M16
47614 Glasgow QS - Perth 1L31

So a bit of kettle action as well as some good long runs behind 37s. Oh, and the 20: this shunted the sleeper portion from one platform at Fort William to join on to the stock that had just arrived from Mallaig in the other. We made a quick dash to get it in the book. I can't remember why 108 was added at Dumbarton, or if this was a regular thing.
Interesting that 5407 on the Mallaig line is presumably the 'Black Five', whereas a different 5407 (BR class 27) would previously probably have run on the route.

They must have been struggling for motive power in London with a WR class 31 turned out on the Aberdeen sleeper. As it was required I took it knowing that in all likelihood it would be re-engined at York or Newcastle. If it was removed at York there would be a decent chance that a Deltic would take the train forward. At York 47402 was waiting to take the train further north. I was forced to stay on the train as the loco change took place in the middle road!
