I wonder if the "Points of View" BBC programme is still running, as that allowed viewer comments about BBC TV perceived annoying matters.

I will sign off as "Offended of Orpington" whilst wondering what Mrs Trellis from North Wales thinks of the matter in hand......

They have "Newswatch" at some point around the weekend on the News Channel. Not sure if it makes it onto Breakfast on the main Channel or not, but that is quite similar to the old Points of View, but focused purely on the news coverage and frequently has criticism of their coverage of Royal events - I seem to recall the "the latest news from the hospital is that there is no news" getting quite a few complaints etc.

Watch it, mate, I genuinely used that strapline in a satirical letter to the Orpington and Kentish Times when I briefly co-owned a business in that town in the 1980s - they even published it! ;)

The media by and large love celebrity gossip. When that gossip is coming from the royals, that love goes up by an order of magnitude. I don't know what came first, the media giving gossip attention or the public's desire for it, but it's now a feedback loop that will be very difficult to break.
Incorrect. The public, by and large, love celebrity gossip. The media, by and large, then follow. It's a continual 'dumbing down' spiral. (Apoligies, I detest the expression 'dumbing down' - it's an insult to dumb people - but it's the easiest term to use.)
I would like to say "slow news day" but there is important stuff going on that's been pushed down the running order by this. Domestically a sitting MP has defected to the Farage Party, and internationally Haiti is on the brink of a civil war. It's pathetic, once again the media is self obsessed, as it was with the Huw Edwards thing, and Philip Schofield.
And if the Sun or Mail had put "MP defects to Farage" or "Haiti on the brink of Civil War" on their front page, how many sales and hits do you think they'd have got today?

To paraphrase a certain famous headline in one such paper: It's the public wot done it!
I don’t care about this case, but to me there’s a difference between a photograph that purports to be an accurate representation and one that’s been fiddled with to make it “look good”. I know that no photograph is ever totally accurate, but if someone wants to make out that the photograph is supposed to be of something “real” they shouldn’t fiddle with it.
Yeah, difficult one. When in the dark room printing steam loco photos, I certainly darkened the smoke from locos to enhance the image. Were the photo for a news report, ie supposedly reporting 'facts', then arguably that should not be done. It's a fine line representing 'reality'.

Either way, the solution is the same: introduce widespread education of critical thinking skills into society.

I don't care because I'm a republican and I'd pack them all off to a cul-de-sac in Leicester anyway, it just goes to show than they're not to be trusted in the way they try to manipulate the media in their favour. The media is just the usual fawning rubbish but will also be annoyed about being made to look stupid.
At least the digital manipulation (however imcompetent) is more interesting than the original "news" of the release of the image — so important that it had to figure on each hourly R4 news summary on Sunday as well as getting the usual exaggerated TV coverage. Do we really pay a licence fee to support this royalist propaganda machine?

Regretably we do, if we like it or not.

The trouble for the BBC is that if they don’t make a major thing of it, like just about every other media outlet, the following day’s Mail/Telegraph/Sun’s front pages will be full of accusations that the BBC is unpatriotic/traitorous by not being interested in the Royals, is stuck up by not covering matters that the public is interested in or is full of lefties who only want to destroy the Royals. The tabloids lead the charge and then condemn others for following them. And it provides a distraction from yet another Conservative embarrassment.

It's not new either, Stalin used to "airbrush" people he had fallen out with out of photos with him.

One thing that amazes me is that some news organisations employ people to pore over photos in the hope of finding evidence that will enable them to say "Look, this photo has been manipulated. Her hand isn't in line with her jumper. Her zip doesn't line up with her buttons."

And then everyone is supposed to get excited about it, so that (for example) we have this thread here discussing whether such drivel matters.

Another instance is the way they go back through the social media accounts of somebody who's recently been appointed to some position or other to find out whether in 2005 they said "I don't like the taste of curry" and can therefore be accused of hate crime.

I suspect that nowadays, because photoshopping of photos is so prevalent, most journalists and editors are automatically in the habit of looking at photos with half an eye for a bit of ’shopping whenever they look at them. Previously, not only was there much less ’shopping, but only the picture editors really had an eye for small inconsistencies: nowadays everyone has.

The original photo may no longer exist if she saved the edited file without changing the filename.
To me, it is all a fuss about nothing.

So to sum up: Husband takes family photo. Wife makes sone minor photoshop adjustments because they’re not happy with it. Complete non-story and nobody else’s business. Seriously, who the hell cares??

“Woman edits photo” is how I imagine Private Eye will satirise this story.

I can’t believe this is even news. There are so much more important things that need attention from the media.
Not quite .....

Strange story this as many normal people have not heard all the conspiracy theories that preceded this photo. So the photo story in itself seems like a big overreaction but the photo was released to quell some of the conspiracy stories which have been gaining momentum and the editing thing has just made it worse

With papers like the mirror suddenly doing articles on a random minor royal that William has allegedly been having an affair with then the momentum is increasing and increasing. And Kensington palace seem to keep making it worse by releasing grainy photos of Kate etc

'Newspapers' Editors and their photographers never edit images do they!:rolleyes:
I'm sure they do plenty, but they will certainly get the subjects' consent first or else they'll be on the wrong end of a libel case (I imagine they get professional editors to do it as well while this photo was clearly an amateur job).

While I think this shouldn't be a big story, the Royals involved only have themselves to blame here for failing to spot the impacts this would have while loads of speculation around Kate's health existed. Had they released an undoctored photo, or no photo at all, the impact would have been less. Maybe they'll learn for future cases though.

Typical Daily Fail hypocrisy, yesterday Sarah Vine says William and Kate “need to come clean about what’s REALLY going on”, today Bel Mooney says the public reaction is a cynical attempt to force them to reveal what the surgery was for and calls for them to be left alone….
