It's quite feasible for one to have made it to Preston Park (and reverse) when engineering work had shut Hove tunnel, though I don't know if any actually did.

Yes, the Brighton - Cardiff service used 156's before the 158's took over. Seen here at West Worthing...
I'm not sure there is enough room with the substation, plus they would have to relocate the telecom mast/hut. Also if it's just temporary whilst Hove sidings are refurbished, then I doubt it makes financial sense.

To me it looks like 264 is the derailed unit which is fouling the adjacent line and the other train has scraped along side it causing the damage to the cab.
Certainly looks that way. There is lighting equipment above the tunnel mouth and fabric/netting visible. Looks like the bit the has fallen has been cleared but is yet to be netted.
Indeed. A train derailing at a tunnel mouth and another train hitting it could have ended up as a catastrophic event. We could have been looking at a real disaster here.
