Comparison of signalling roles between countries and systems

I was wondering if anyone knew of anything that compared signalling roles between countries and systems. Every country has its own unique practices and its own terminology, and most of the stuff online is only for one country (sometimes even treating what's country-specific as universal!).

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

So what were they using for the afternoon service between the restarting of services and the 6th of May?

Differences in the adoption of 'bogie' coaches between the UK and USA

For Marshall's involvement with the CLR see The Story of London's Underground. Siemens' involvement with the W&C is from Wikipedia; unfortunately I do not have access to the Oakwood Press book they cite, but other web sources repeat the claim about Siemens and the fact that they at the very...

Differences in the adoption of 'bogie' coaches between the UK and USA

Yes, that doesn't say he was in favour of a specific American implementation of low voltage DC. The Story of London's Underground, the cited source, just says this: Note that as far as I can tell the Met/District electrification was the first in London to use a fourth rail, a clear deviation...

What are the officially used names for these controls/indicators in a cab?

What are the officially used names for these controls/indicators in a cab? The control that combines the throttle and brake Switch that when toggled on ensures that power is applied before the brakes are fully released on trains with a combined throttle/brake, for use on hill starts (do any UK...

Differences in the adoption of 'bogie' coaches between the UK and USA

But there's a key thing you've left out here - third rail systems were already in use in London on the C&SLR and CLR. All the sources just say that Yerkes was in favour of low-voltage DC, not that he was in favour of a specific American implementation of it.

HS2 Euston - Development, design and construction news (not speculation, please)

Has that been set out in any more detail than the mayors in question saying "we'd like to do 2a with private sector money"?

Differences in the adoption of 'bogie' coaches between the UK and USA

No, they planned to use it but the switch to third rail electrification was made before the line opened. The Wikipedia articles, and their sources, only say that Yerkes was in favour of a third rail system. They do not say that the system used was American in origin. Can you elaborate on this...

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

Oh no it isn't! Japanese railways charge flat distance-based fares, and split ticketing is still a thing there. To quote the google translation of JR West's FAQ:

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

I think you will find that the railway of 1993 was dramatically safer than the railway of 1948.

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

I don’t know about statements made by politicians, but it definitely wasn’t in the manifesto:

Differences in the adoption of 'bogie' coaches between the UK and USA

Some of it had Americans involved in financing etc. , but to say it was "built" by Americans is surely an exaggeration, and do you have a source for the electrification system being US technology? The CS&LR was a very early example of electrification, after all... These coaches were a special...

Deutsche Bahn US consultant: Global Best Practices for Cutting the Cost of Building High Speed Rail

I thought this video might be interesting in the light of HS2's curtailment. A consultant with DB's US consultancy organisation gives a presentation on controlling HSR costs: His bullet points are: Build simple and useful projects Break up civil works contracts and set itemised costs Manage...

Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

I believe this was (at least until recently) also the case in Germany - admittedly my only source for this is a German train simulator penalising you if you don't do it, but considering that train simulator is Zusi 3, which is used to train actual drivers...

    2023 Israel - Hamas war

But the key thing to remember is that most of Netanyahu's unpopularity is due to corruption, the business with the judiciary, and other domestic issues. The protests would be much, much, smaller if those issues were not present but his policy towards the Palestinians did not change.

Repatriating La Moye - has anyone heard anything?

An update on the situation; a few months ago Eskom put a bid out to find organisations willing to take La Moye and four of Eskom's other steam locos for a five-year lease. However it appears they are only interested in South African organisations, so that seems to put a bit of a kibosh on the...

Belfast Dublin Enterprise service upgrade funded

City centre stations in the US tend to have bloated platform numbers because of the lack of through-running infrastructure and services - Philadelphia is IIRC the sole exception. NY is a rather aggravating example because Amtrak trains through-run through Penn Station, but commuter trains don't...

Is green electricity subsidising rail freight?

Until electric trucks become widespread. The "oh you can't impose emissions regulations on us, trucking is worse" argument will not hold up soon, if it ever did.

Railway Industry Association - A new strategy for delivering a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway by 2050

Probably of interest - of particular note is that the argument that nearly all services could be electrified via battery trains if just 66% of the network was electrified...
